My Unitron 150  on the 150 mount with extra large legs.......

I only had this scope for 6 weeks  then I had a chance to buy the AP 6 f12 Starfire and this one had to be sold  along with quite a few others

I think in the final analysis, it was all about the hunt. It seemed so for me. Kind of like what Spock said: “After a time, you may find that ‘having’ is not so pleasing a thing after all as ‘wanting.’ It is not logical, but it is often true.” It was definitely true for me.

This Unitron 140 from 1959 has great optics    no surprise  here it is on the alt az

The 1958 model 140 that I had did as well! It presented very sharp views! I’ve often heard that they had the best Unitron objectives of the bunch.

The earlier Unitrons tested very well in DPAC.   Must have been the cottage industry lens makers early on had honed their lens making skills to a fine art.

Well, my very early 142 had a horrible objective. DPAC was awful - zones and rough. Out of focus stars were triangular. Thanks to you, it now has a good objective. What I found interesting is that the early objective is much thinner than the later ones.

I noticed that also when I was cleaning a few objectives. Some were thicker then others.  Seems other people have found the same thing with other scopes besides Unitron.  Kind of tell tales about the cottage lens making industry in Japan during the early years after the war.

My UNI 3" & 4" objectives were 1950s versions, and both had excellent DPAC Patterns.  The 1964 ASTRO 76 edged-out the UNI, and the 1958 Edmund 4" was slightly better than the 4" UNI -- BUT, this poor scope had been damp-barn stored for many many years!

This is why i would pay more for pre 1965 made U's if not fogged up.
