Hi!

I was thinking and discussing with friends about possible feature of EAA observations. Somehow all my friends ended up with an augmented reality setup with following functions:

- you are looking at the sky with your own eyes at magnification 1x, and can look in any direction.

- the assist system shows you constellations, information, hints for objects and so on, superimposed to your vision, like AR glasses. Basically Stellarium in AR.

- if you are interested in an object, you make a command (button, gesture, voice), and the system starting to show you magnified, filtered long-exposure image of an object you are looking at, for example from telescope + camera, standing near you. Basically EAA image, superimposed to your vision. Preferably at different magnifications, from 1x to 50x.

I can not believe, that such system not already exists.

So my question is, are you aware of such AR system for astronomers?

Update: I am of course aware of planetarium SW in VR, but it is not the goal.

If I’m understanding the written description at the top, it sounds like taking a binoculars-like device outside and looking through it at the live sky with the option to view someone else’s stored pictures of selectable images. This sounds like a wonderful device that provides a great way to introduce the sky to someone but it would not be EAA. If it becomes available, I’d certainly buy two for my daughters….

Thanks! Honestly I can not fully understand, what they offer, but at least similar idea, and also valuable information about cheap AR headset Aryzon and Star Chart App.

That is already very close! The App looks promising, all functions related to 1x magnification from my wishlist are there. Definitely will purchase and try it. Almost no hope to introduce EAA to the App, but at least I can try the concept and check, if I will like it.

Are you referring to my description, or to the post from Udi? Because in my description I want to have live EAA images from my telescope standing nearby. But for a device with stored pictures see the link in Udi‘s post, seems you can already buy it…

I've been thinking of something similar. A live view of the sky projected on the ceiling, simulating what the sky would look like in near real time if the skies were darker or my eyes were really sensitive.

Almost doable with an all sky camera and a 4k projector, but the all sky images I have seen are fish-eye views. Is it possible to see a large, flat view of a large part of the sky?

I would prefer a projection to a headset to able to share and point with another person.

Hm, I must also think about this idea… Sounds great to me for winter time, when it is too cold outside! Technically it is not a problem to change fish-eye image to rectangular projection. I can not say immediately how to do it for EAA, but it is normal thing for photographers.

I was also thinking about interaction between users in AR headsets. Technically not a problem, you can show a point, where one headset pointed at, in the other headset. They can also share same magnified EAA images as well.

You could possibly leverage one of the higher resolution head track FPV headsets and slave your scope to it. Might be cheaper than AR glasses. The API’s exist for the devices so pairing it to a scope is an integration exercise.

Back in the late ‘80’s we had a system used for flight simulation that was projected on the inside of a done and put up a 240 degree medium resolution image with a hole cut and a high resolution image slaved to the pilots eye and head movements. Buck then it took several racks of equipment, now it could be done on a high end NUC.

Much of the head track software is released under Creative Commons. One head track system for FPV is here:

This is quite intriguing. I'm currently doing an Educational Technology masters, with thesis focus on EAA. Have you used EAA in education yourself?

Best,

Mark

Hi, Mark, no I am electrical engineer, nothing to do with image processing or astronomy.

Is your thesis topic already defined? Or are you looking for ideas?

My thesis topic is mostly defined, but still at the point where I can refine it.

It basically centers around EAA and it's potential for use in education both on site and remotely.
