You don't see many 12" Astromaks come up. I believe there were only 17 made.  A 12" F5 Mak. And this one looks like a beautiful example. I believe these were made as large format film astrographs. With a large secondary obstruction, I wonder how they work visually? Back in the 80s, I think S&T had an article about them – I'll have to check.

Bob

Problem with the mount is that it's too old to properly integrate (without a lot of work) with modern electronics, GPS, cameras.  That limits their utility and will at least keep the price down.

Yep, looks about right, except that my seeing (or light grasp) would never support that much magnification. About the only effect that I have ever seen with a large CO (up to 50%) is that after a while the sharp first diffraction ring around bright stars is noticeable. Other than that, nanda. If I recall right the HST has a fairly large CO. Seems to work okay. smile.gif

The HST is not a visual telescope.

Ahhhh, that explains it…

BTW… that makes it worse. You can’t hide little foibles from a camera, it sees all. Visual systems are far more forgiving, at least mine are. Most of my gear gets used for both visual and imaging. It’s always interesting when I’m having a rough night imaging and I end up swapping out the camera for an eyepiece. It invariably looks fine, but the camera just wasn’t having it.

Anywho, that looks like an amazing observatory class scope.

The loss of contrast wtih a huge CO is not (as) important for imaging. It can be softwared out.

One came up a month or so ago. Maybe the same one in a different context.

Except that enhancing contrast in software compresses the image dynamic range.  There is always a cost.

Must have been a quick restore if it’s the same one. I recall the earlier one was in need of TLC. This one looks very nice.

After reading the description, I believe it is the same one just cleaned up, assembled and now on consignment. The previous link is dead.

I’m so sorry you got hammered! My home was flooded in hurricane Eliana. The devastation cannot be understood by those who have not experienced the disaster. Not easy to recover from this tragedy.

Chas:

Sorry that you got hit by Helene. What counts most is that you seem to be okay.

Even though I pick on you about it, did the 'Vette actually get trashed? You make it sound like it tried to become a boat or a submarine. I actually do hope that it escaped unscathed. Cars are like best girl friends without the headaches! LOL

As for the line "... 9 in my way and going out with junk soon.". Was that cars or scopes? What scopes and what kind of damage? It's kind of hard to imaging that you would toss any scope into the dumpster, no matter what. Too bad you are so far away or we'd haul away your "junk". LOL

Keep your head up high and carry on.

Floods are bad, cars get some of the worst of it.  You don't even need a hurricane.  I was up north (Ontario-Canada) in the spring and drove (in my then new 2004 Mustang Mach-1) onto a dry-looking dirt road.  I quickly sank up 1/2 way up my door in mud, clay-like mud.  I had to go out the window, walked a mile to a local garbage dump and waited for the tow.  It took the tow truck an hour to pull me out  and in the process, almost getting stuck itself.  Upside, after $500 worth of cleaning and forced drying, the car was pretty much ok.  I hope that's about all that is needed for Chas's Corvette.

That happened to me in a Cavalier. My GF and I were exploring the Black Canyon of the Gunnison north rim. Primitive up there. I saw a dirt road heading south and a "ROAD CLOSED" sign. But it looked fine to me. It was fine for about 5 minutes. Then the wheels started to feel squirrely. I realized I was in mud. I was still moving so I put it in low gear and floored it - basically I hydroplaned on the mud until I found a place to turn around. Then repeat the whole process getting out. I made it. Don't take dirt roads in Colorado in April. Snow melts etc.
