Haha, I had a similar experience going from the LA suburbs to Death Valley. Orion nebula was huge, and the Andromeda Galaxy was a clear fuzzy disk not unlike your drawings. Nice work.

Glad you were able to see the Milky Way like that. I remember the first night I saw it at our second property (approx 21.73 mag/arcsec2) and it just puts you in awe. I believe the issue of light pollution would be more seriously addressed by the public if the entire planet lost power for a few hours during a new moon. Then everyone could go outside and look up and see what they've been missing - they'd "get it".
