I just accidentally deleted about 1/3 of the lights for the project I'm working on because I am dumb.
Thought I'd share.

Sorry for your loss… I feel your pain because I recently deleted 24 hours of luminance data on the Iris Nebula. I try not to think about it but the pain fades over time.

Ditto -- last week accidentally deleted 8 hours of narrowband from my Bat and Squid project - https://www.cloudyni...-and-squid-hoo/

Oupsy... can't try to recover it with a dedicated app tool?
Posted 12 October 2024 - 01:37 PM
It was the best third, to boot. No moon. :O( Probably worth as much in terms of SNR as the other 2/3. I can't even make a stack or stacks, either. I accidentally blew away the entire directory, including the previous stack.
So dumb.

So they are beyond recovery? Not in bin?

No, not recoverable. Shift + delete because duh I never make mistakes, obviously. So stupid.

shift delete just bypasses the trash bin. unless you overwrote it, it is still there.

if they are still intact it wil cost you approx 60-80 bucks to get them back

Wait, I'm so dumb I made two mistakes. It looks like I only deleted about 10% of the data, not 1/3. I accidentally deleted the folder that contained the last 1/3 of that 1/3 of the data, along with the previous stack, but it was not the entire 1/3 I thought it was. It really was probably the best 10%, but that's way better than the best 1/3. I'll have to preprocess the remaining frames again (about 270 lights), but I'll take what I can get.

After getting data I always check them in FitsViewer for bad star shapes, clouds, etc.. before stacking, and sometimes I'm clicking the delete button very fast (out of impatience I guess) then I suddenly realize I was deleting some of my good subs

M31. I posted a peak before but it was only about 1 hour's worth of integration.

sounds like your second mistake was fortuitous, and ended up with 1/9th loss rather than 1/3rd. You are actually up 2/9ths! Got lucky

Have you tried a synthetic light?

not possible for OP to do that

I just finished 24 hours of Ha on this. If I knew how to send it to you I would to help out.
Thank you for the offer. I ended up with 8 hours of Ha and Oiii and I am good with that. I will be on the look out for your post when you get yours finished.

Not impossible if he asks ChatGPT…

You may still be able to recover the files. There are several free tools that can scan for deleted files. I've often used https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva - and it works surprisingly often, especially if the files were deleted very recently.

I just dumped 8 hours of good Bortle 1 data, because the stupid white balance on the 2600MC went to 95/52 for some unknown reason.
I had to start the project again, and only have managed 6 hours since the stuff up.
AP is full of errors and mistakes and try again moments.

white balance on the 2600MC? that doesn't make sense. white balance isn't baked into the raw files...

That's what generative AI does. Without regard to the copyrighted source, too! Doing that yourself and claiming it as your own will get you booted from CN.
Of course, the OP is well versed in creating synthetic channels. If all else fails, he could just clone the data he didn't toss…
