114 Unitron:

https://www.ebay.com...:Bk9SR-C1tP3cZA

Looks to be in excellent shape, but the opening bid price is much too high.    The BIN price is astronomical.

I like that it has a dated invoice which helps in dating others and confirms when I estimated about when one of my mounts was from.

Large refractor (7"?) with a Unitron focuser, anyone can recognize it? or maybe ATM, auction in Lake Forest, Illinois.

https://www.ebay.com...emis&media=COPY

ATM, frankenscope mish mash of parts.

In response to some other comments:

From the photos you can't ID it from the cell and I don't believe Jaegers made a 6" f/8. (5,10,&15 yes).

(Edit: wasn't completely sure so double checked, and some years Jaegers did offer a 6" f/8)

The plate is on something black so it's likely on the motor box of the mount, so it's not a repurposed tube from a Criterion Newt .

I did not know they are giving out Nobel prizes for Auction Theory:

https://en.wikipedia.../Auction_theory

Universities, especially some in the U.S. will offer degrees on almost anything.

Plate on the tube says Criterion, I didn't know they made refractors so maybe a repurposed Newtonian tube?  The mount is interesting, it looks like like part of it, the t-section was pipe machined to fit.  The legs look like they were made on a wood lathe but the fittings seem to be good fits.

I'm pretty sure Criterion is the mount, not the OTA?

Jaegers 6" f/8 with Criterion Dynascope mount.

-drl

The seller says 8" ID for the dewshield which seems too big for a 6" Jaegers, Also, the second photo shows a quality of finish on the OTA and a flanged objective end that I've never seen on any other Jaegers scope. Granted, it may be a high end DIYer using a Jaegers  objective, but I'm not convinced that's what I'm seeing

Definitely an Alt/Az C80. Looks to be in very good condition.

That's exactly what I just got for $10 local pickup! Absolutely a great scope.

Yes I think this was a 6" Dynascope that was recreated as a 6" f/8 refractor.

I'm on the fence about the 310, but the little Vixen is definitely a keeper.

Well... you owners of Meade (Mizar) refractors could always donate them to Bomber Bob's Old Scope Testing Facility...  I still haven't run a DPAC on any of them... (WHY did I retire?  Oh, yeah.  Home Improvements -- too bad I can't D-I-Y my own back.)  I assume Mizar sourced the lenses from the same maker as their own-branded scopes, but y'all know what they say about that word...

Speaking of Meade / Mizar...   Mizar MMD-III Complete Drive System w/ Box & Manual:   https://zenmarket.jp...ode=o1158876131

Currently @ $35 + shipping.  Also includes the hard-to-find big gear that replaces the R/A slo-mo handle.  IIRC, I paid about $75 for best condition MMD-III -- identical to this one.

My unhappiness with SGW continues...

Don't blame you!  $150 opening bid??  For a 40mm AZ kit??  I had to check & see... thought it might be Pawn Stars rather than a GW non-profit seller...

Skip the Unitron!  Mizar AR-1 EQ w/ Wood Tripod:   https://zenmarket.jp...Code=1159095917

Currently @ $11 + shipping.  Cradle for a 100mm Newt detached.  SVBONY & others make VG single / dual bolt dovetail clamps that fit.

No Haze, but dirty lens...   1979 Takahashi TS-80 F15 S-APO Triplet w/ Goodies IOC:   https://zenmarket.jp...ode=e1158999756

Currently @ $180 + shipping.  Cradle + 3 eyepieces + Finder + OAG in VG cosmetic condition.

Why get 1 when you can buy 2?   Pair - Takahashi .965" Prism Diagonals:   https://zenmarket.jp...ode=g1158827950

Currently @ $8 + shipping.  I've bought MIZAR stuff from this Seller with zero complaints.

I just sold an ST90 on eBay. Maybe the buyer had second thoughts and is trying to flip it.

I had one.

It's definitely undermounted and the tripod looks like it was made out of balusters. The seller says the overall length is 58" and the inside diameter of the dewshield is 8". Sounds like a 7" f/7-f/8 scope. Early AP scope? D&G?

Train wreck on that mount. Shake and bake city kitty.  Great optics are no good on a small mount.

Yeah, the 6" Jaegers kit and lens cell was built for a 7" OD tube, so a dew shield that flares out would indeed probably be 8". My 6" f/15 has a 8.5" OD dew shield from an ES AR152.

My unhappiness with SGW continues...

I have been watching this one as I find myself in need of a small refractor that uses .965  to try out my Vixen sun prism now that I've acquired the Vixen sun glass for sun prism that was made for it. I left a very nice one back in storage in Washington..frown.gif

A more economical option might be this Meade #226 60mm refractor. I had one that I recently gave away here on CN. It's Towa made but offers very clear lunar and planetary views. I never did view the sun with it, however. It's a yoke style mount but I put it on a Polaris with some 60mm rings I have.

guy who found the OTA is on reddit and was asking about it as a "beginner's first scope."

He hadn't yet found the mount.  (I've not yet found the legs, or assumed hex)

There's a lovely Celeston 8" sct.  like the Unitrons almost untouched.
Trying to suggest to them that the 8" SCT (complete with wedge) is the one to focus on.

This school (?) district must have bought these 50+ years ago and never used them or something.

I did the same thing with a thick wall Lomo reflector tube, turned it into a 5 inch refractor.  I think the orginal owner wanted something lighter than the 1/10th inch aluminum tube it had. But as for refractors of mysterious pedigree, I swear in 1974 I saw a  five inch refractor marked "CAVE" in a display at Toronto's science centre.  It was grouped with a Cave Newtonian and a Cassegrain.

So did I, but it had in my eyes considerably more colour error than the 80mm,

I had my old man take a look at it. He says that he believes Criterion did actually offer a 4" f/12 or f/15 refractor for a short period of time. They never sold any or maybe just a few and dropped the idea in less than a year. He THINKS he may have seen it listed in their catalog back in the late 60's. At least, that's what's in the cobwebs of his cranium. LOL

He agrees that this is a Freankenscope. The lens is very likely from Jeagers. Having some better photos would be helpful but, that rarely happens on EvilBay. LOL The tripod was made well. He suspects legs were cobbled from an old four poster bed frame and repurposed for this project. The focuser is obviously from Unitron. The paint is definitely NOT original. It is gloss black. Criterion used a matted black crinkle finish. Criterion never offered strap style retainer bands on a flat plate saddle, either. The mount does have a DEC drive and the large setting circles which give him cause to believe it came from an 8" reflector. That mount would indeed be appropriate for a 6" f/8 refractor. A Vogel variable speed RA drive controller is in the box with the heavily used extension tube and diagonal along with a TELRAD.

This one may be a hidden gem. No pun intended but, was accidental. Sorry! IF it were closer we would very likely be all over it. Unfortunately, this person will not ship it. DRAT! It is just odd enough to be interesting and something that would fit within our crazy collection. We have at least one of every Jeagers 6" lens but, the F/8 model. FUDGE AND FIDDLESTICK! Oh well. Hopefully, someone will rescue it.

FWIW

Not being well versed on Unitron this looks like the auction company broke up a photo EQ model. Is that possible?

At $15,000 this morning with 1 week and 5 days to go.  It ends on 11/14.

The 75mm Pentax and mount are still available for $1128, with free shipping.  I'd get it if I didn't already have a 76mm Tak:

I recommend you get it strongly.  He’s a good seller I’ve bought from many times, and this exact scope, just the SD version, is my grab and go.  It is always assembled and ready.
