Jim Daley built a 5" coronagraph for imaging the corona in the Fe X line (6374A). The instrument is described in this Reflector article from September 2024 https://www.astrolea...-2024-pages.pdf , with more details here in December 2023 https://www.astrolea...-2023-pages.pdf . (He originally built it for prominences but adapted it for the E-corona.)

On October 8, 2024 at 10am, he took the attached photo, which he asked me to share with you. When I can get the TIFF file, I will share it but for now please accept this screen shot. It has very fine detail, similar to Klaus's recent post https://www.cloudyni...ona/?p=13776611 .

It is great to see coronal amateur action going on.

George

Very nice shot. Congratulations to Jim !

I am surprised by the very short exposure time. Is it really 0.91 ms ?

Thanks for noticing the typo, Christian. That should be 91ms.

These are neat images!

Please remind me: he is using a 5 Å filter, right? I wonder what one original frame looks like - maybe you could ask him to send you one so you can share it here?

Klaus

Here is a single frame from Jim for the same image. You see the aerosols streaking by. George

Thank you!

There is quite a bit of stuff floating through the air, which is typical for a low altitude location. The image is very nice though, but I think Jim would greatly benefit from going to a higher elevation on a clear day, if he has the chance.

Thanks, yes it is a good single image, and also demonstrates the value of stacking and processing. His scope is in his observatory, and not particularly movable.

It does point out the tradeoff between portability versus size and complexity. Unless you own a mountain, the K-corona will require a portable scope.
