I noticed a small ding on my RA worm's brass drive gear on my Atlas EQ-G while tuning it, so I ordered a used replacement in the classifieds. The tops of the gears teeth on the replacement are significantly more rounded than my originals which are completely machined flat. The gear with the rounded teeth seem to mesh better when viewed through a lens. Are these just manufacturing variations? It seems pretty substantial in the realm of precision (I know it's not a super high end mount), I mean it's barely noticeable without a lens, but there is a difference. Would there be a performance issue between the two, would the flat teeth be causing me more backlash?

On the worm you should be able to see the contact area which is not the top of the peak. So generally the peak is not too important when properly meshed as the contact area is lower down.
