There is a parking garage (converted barn) attached to my apartment building, which is heated and awesome in winter. However, the designers were clearly not night sky lovers. They put sconces like these at equidistant intervals--four on each side of the garage for security lighting. Light is everywhere, including straight up for some reason. Ignorance? Anyway, I want to replace all 8. I'll even pay for it! Question is: how would you broach this topic with your Super? Also, not sure if there is a recognized standard for "dark sky compliant," but which of these would you choose?

I would choose something that directs the light down, like the tubular ones in your last link.

And use the lowest lumen bulb as I could.

The problem is people think that outside lighting makes them more secure. Quite the opposite.

But the Sheriffs here tell people like my neighbors that outside lights make them safer.

I have some neighbors down the street 2 doors who must have won the lotto. The just did a huge amount of remodeling and put some terribly bright outside lights in their backyard.

They even light up the overhead wires and pole in their backyard.

All the excessive lighting does is make it safer to run away from those blinded by all the light. Duck into a dark area and disappear.

I have a condo complex behind me but across the ditch. I put a wall topper on the block wall and sit down in the shadow.

I can't stop them very well, but I have blocked their obnoxious HOA.

I was visiting with my next door neighbors and the subject if the neighbor down the street came up.

Fernando told me they put something that looks like a lit up dance floor in their back yard, and that is what makes the obnoxious bright lights shining up and out everywhere.

I used to like Disco in the late 1970's, but even I outgrew it. undecided.gif
