There will be a grazing lunar occultation of Saturn on Sunday evening, November 10, 2024 during the early evening hours. The graze path, where a partial occultation occurs, runs through Central Florida. Points south and east will see a total occultation. Points north and west will see a very close conjunction (see image). Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and the Orlando Science Center (home of Florida’s largest publicly accessible refractor telescope) are all in the graze path.

Here's an example of a grazing occultation (Saturn - 2007 March 16 - partial occultation): https://apod.nasa.go...d/ap070316.html .

The weather forecast could be better, but not bad. Here's the Cloud Cover Forecast: https://i.ibb.co/1fb67qF/southeast.png .

Unfortunately it was pretty cloudy where I'm at. BUT there were a couple fortuitous little holes in the bigger clouds that were covering the Moon. Just enough that I was able to see a good bit here and there as Saturn started to hide behind the Moon. First time seeing an occultation like this, pretty cool!

My area got the first rain in quite some time on Sunday and Sunday night.  Oh, well, I'm far from the path of the grazing occultation anyway.

In Edmonton Canada with poor conditions, thin upper haze that i hoped would clear out but no dice although briefly at near culmination and with pretty clear conditions & @60X with my B&L 60mm spotter i was able to fit a very sharp & clear Plato and a bit of the northwest limb and Saturn (with the ring shadow plainly seen) in one beautiful field as i spent a few hours intermittantly following the close encounter (hoping for better) starting with Saturn off the western limb by about a half degree and just north then a couple hours later the moon climbed up about a degree as Saturn slid down south falling so low that at first surprisingly i couldn't find it it as haze had reformed again hiding it from easy view.

A super memorable dual observation i'll not soon forget despite sub optimal conditions.

Clearest Skies always the hope and seldom the reality now.

Since 5 days in between I benefit from a permanent Sat occultation in daylight by the earth during the nights by clouds.

Funny thing, looking forward to NOT seeing a target

I spent a good amount of time watching this conjunction last night with clear skies and reasonable seeing.  The main scope for this observation was a loaner Zhumell 203mm Dobsonian using multiple eyepieces.  As is usual for me, I started with a 40mm plossl and then increased magnification using a set of Orion Expanse (66 degree) eps.  The Expanse set includes 20mm, 15mm, 9mm, and 6mm and these yeilded magnifications of 60x, 80x, 133x, and 200x.  At 200x I began to see atmospheric shimmer but it was not sufficiently intrusive to prevent enjoying the view.  At closest conjunction the moon's brightness did wash out Saturn a bit.  Still, this was a very good viewing session with it being only the second time I've used this telescope.

No conjunction, but I caught Saturn (above) and a close flyby by Tiangong (below and a near graze) at 5:43pm Pacific yesterday as clouds and crappy weather started rolling in.

Single frame pulled from a brief video capturing the close pass posted to my YouTube channel. Never thought I’d even see Tiangong…

I went out and viewed this conjunction with my 10x50 binocular.  Very nice view.

Caught it and it was very nice. It gave me a chance to use my 2" EP's to catch both the moon and Saturn in one FOV. Always a nice sight.

I ended up checking out a few OC's since I already had the 35mm Panoptic in the scope.

It was cloudy here in Central Florida, so observing was a no-go.
