Triangulum: 2 out of 8, STF 158 and HO 217

 

From my set 8.5 to 10.5m of tri, just 2 are worth noting. The rest meh, or, as Chevalier (around 1910) CHE 51 and 63, way off from the official data, had considerable problems to locate / identify them at all.

 

With 110/660 in very good conditions. Prior to that I was able to see the Triesnecker rilles in FULL! smile.png, very enjoyable.

 

STF 158 is a pearl. Wonderful in 110x. 2.1", 9.0/9.4m is physical, there is an orbital solution. White-yellowish.

 

HO 217 rather a challenge, but in few moments it glimpsed through at also 110x. 2.7", 8.6/10.8m, alading gives the mags a bit more favorable with Gmag 9.1/10.6.

I observed STF 158 with my 90mm refractor in December of 2011. At 230X, both the A and B components were white, with the D component having no color. The C component was not seen.

 

Burnham's Celestial Handbook lists the magnitudes of the C and D stars as 12.5 and 11.5 respectively, while the WDS magnitudes are 15.23 for the C star and 12.82 for the D star. I'm guessing the BCH magnitudes are closer to the truth, or at least they match the results I had with my refractor. shrug.gif

 

I've put HO 217 on my list to observe. In looking it up in my star atlas, I noticed it lies just north of STF 310. You didn't happen to observe this double that night (or previously), did you? If so, I'd be interested in your results. With my 90mm refractor, I could only suspect, but not definitively see, the secondary at 230X. At 200X with my 20cm reflector, easily resolved with the colors being white and gray.

Didn't bother with the CD of STF 158, out of range or at the limit anyway. Alading gives them as Gmag 14.9 and 12.6, corresponds to what WDS says.

 

I can only find one try on STF 310 with my former 88/498.

"A hint/guess at best of a very tight one". What equals to not seen, just a suspicion, very analogous to your observation. Conditions were OK but not outstanding.

Thanks for bringing this one to our attention, A check of my records shows one observation of STF 158, on 2019-Sept-23, using a Celestron-11.

 

Ocean Observatory, Coos Bay, Oregon, fairly clear with Milky Way faintly visible overhead down to at least the Scutum star cloud, seeing is fair, no Moon, collimation is pretty good

 

Σ 0158

 

Double star - 9.0/9.4 magnitudes @ 2.2 arc-seconds, not very high in the sky, at 255X there is a fair amount of separation with dark sky between components, good brightness contrast, there's a lot of extra seeing "hash" around the pair, the primary seems a little warmer color, no notable field stars, a nice double

 

The same night I did observe Σ 0310.

 

Double star - 7.4/10.4 magnitudes @ 2.2 arc-seconds, at 56X this is a tough one with 3 magnitude difference and close separation, sometimes the secondary is visible always in the same PA, the seeing isn't real good, the primary is kind of smeared out, very slight amount of dark sky between 'em, this one is resolved but a real mess

Hm, some recap tonight with my 110/660. Conditions were quite good.

STF 158 still was nicely in, and also at HO 217 I could confidently assess the PA, where the B glimpsed through secondwise, both in 110x.

 

Then I gave a try to STF 310, invested quite some time, last knowledge being of something around 2". 110x and 190x to no avail, the best guess what the PA could be was far off, and even after knowledge of the PA there was not one hint I could swear on.
A difficult fellow. In aladin it is even a bit better than in WDS, giving Gmag 7.3/10.0, measured therein with 2.5" distance instead of the 2.2" stated in skysafari. Didn't help either ... shrug.gif
