Carried my dog out about an hour ago, and the temp was great and a light breeze, so no dew. I decided to get out my small 90 ETX ( USA optics ) and try Saturn for the first time this year. Knew that the rings were edge on, but they showed up great, there was no boiling, and could see one of the moons easily. I was using a modest 18mm eyepiece, giving about 70X. It was really a wonderful sight with no boiling, it was just like looking at a good photo. These small 90ETX's are awesome for the money invested. I think I gave $100 for the OTA from Telescope Warehouse and it was like new. Bill said that he compared this OTA with a Questar he also had, and there was no difference in the views.

Glad you got some quality time viewing Saturn, and in good seeing conditions.

Saturn was bright yesterday too here in CT.  I’m just starting Astro and have a tracking mount, and a scope..which I wasn’t going to buy but I did….. on order.

i had a 600mm telephoto lens, but no tracking mount, so all I got was a UFO shaped object, 4 sec exposure.  I may have jiggled the lens/camera because I can’t believe it moved that quick in 4 seconds.

We ve been getting reasonable seeing now and again and that's November but as we edge into December, historically , for me in the northeast it settles in between Pickering 4-6.

Even though it is close to or on the meridian, Saturn has been difficult all summer long and now into November. I seldom got a decent view. We had a hard rain Sunday and Monday and it is clear and cold now. I set up a planet-killer: Explore Scientific 102mm achromatic F=660mm -- and then... I added the ES 5X focal extender and for the eyepiece used a 40mm Ploessl and then a 32. I finally got to see an upper and lower band. The northern band was very distinct. I placed Titan correctly.

Clear Skies,

Mike M.
