Got out to the driveway as was itching to do another lunar sketch.  Had so much fun with the last ones.  This time have better tools. Picked up some charcoal pencils and proper sketching paper  Some Strathmore mixed media 184 pound.  Nice paper.

No idea what io was going to draw.  Scanned the sunrise area for contrast and oh, there is a very bright crater. Set to work on it for a solid hour. Seeing was okay for my suburban area.  However after about thirty minutes the moon started to pass through the neighbors tree.  No where else to move the scope to. The view undulating but kept at it.  Took notes and finished. Then a quick view of Saturn and Jupiter and done for the evening.

I tried to focus on Aristarchus but was drawn to the area below it in my drawing. The entire area rather mottled. Struggled with drawing it.  So shaded it and then dabbed at with an eraser and blending stick. So more of a representation than how it looks.

Now with the clouds back and the moon approaching full getting ready to gear up for DSO sketching next week. Have all my supplies to try the Mellish technique.

I think you captured the mottling very well. Really nice sketch!

Really nice work here, John.  I admire your tenacity, and a great choice of subject.  I agree with John M. that you handled the mottling very well.  I think you'll continue to enjoy using that Strathmore heavy paper.  Almost a card stock.  Do you also have that for your Mellish sketching?  That's what I've started using.  Can't wait to see your work!

Yes, also purchased the same Strathmore in black.  If time will practice starting with one or two of my existing sketches on white paper. Otherwise hope for a clear night to get out and sketch a DSO or two.

Very fine work! I can't control black charcoal while trying a lunar sketch. It seems to go everywhere I don't want it!
Clear skies,
