Hi all,
I have a Canon M3 and a star adventure GTI.

The star adventure GTI can control the cameras to take a shot using the snap cable:

Do you know if it is possible to control the camera shutter via cable in some way or only with the IR remote RC6

I personally never used the snap port.

I just use either the internal intervalometer of my camera (Nikon, exposures 30s and below) or an external intervalometer (for longer than 30s).

As far as I understand, for the snap port you need to use a cable and the SynScan app (which has an option to act as an intervalometer).

The M3 doesn't support remote shutter via the USB socket.

I can't tell what kind of cable the Snap Port requires.

I am not familiar with M3.

The cable should be something like this: https://www.amazon.c...t/dp/B01N0Z53V5

Not USB but a barrel type.

I just ordered a cable for myself. Gonna try it.

Might be able to get rid of the external intervalometer...

Hello to everyone smile.gif

I personally never used the snap port.

I just use either the internal intervalometer of my camera (Nikon, exposures 30s and below) or an external intervalometer (for longer than 30s).

As far as I understand, for the snap port you need to use a cable and the SynScan app (which has an option to act as an intervalometer).

unfortunatly canon don't have the internal intervalometer.

Canon M3 on the body have just a 3.5 jack that is used for microphone and usb that can be used just to transfer pictures on the pc or to a printer...unfortunately that camera don't even support the remote shutter from the Eos utility software on windows, that is what i have read searching on internet.

only way to activate from remote the shutter is using the rc6 IR remote..that is very basic or using the app on android by canon "camera connect" that in this case just let you have a view of the live view and change settings like iso, shutter speed or aperture...is not even possible change from AV to M to TV frown.gif

The M3 doesn't support remote shutter via the USB socket.

I can't tell what kind of cable the Snap Port requires.

very sad that they don't give to a camera a very basic function...very sad years for canon these years...It really seems like they wanted to disgust the world of mirrorless cameras

I am not familiar with M3.

The cable should be something like this: https://www.amazon.c...t/dp/B01N0Z53V5

Not USB but a barrel type.

so i think that to start with astrophotography i will use my Canon 50d and i will buy that one:

https://www.amazon.i...J6LGKEAH5&psc=1

and should work ok with the intervalometer that i will set on the star adventure gti ?

It's strange that people say you can't have shutter control via USB, it's listed as fully controllable in the Linux libgphoto2 library, which means it should be accessible with KStars/Ekos on a Mac or Linux computer. So if you have access to a Mac or Linux machine, load KStars on it (it's free) create a hardware profile for it, and see if it will work as advertised.

Canons website does mention that it doesn't support shutter release via USB, only SNAP cable. The USB was only to transfer files from the camera to a PC.

Well, I'm at a loss as to why it's listed as fully controllable. Perhaps Canon was referring to their own software? Dunno.

At any rate, it doesn't hurt to rig up KStars/Ekos on a Mac or Linux machine and give it a go. It's either gonna work or it ain't, and if it does, the OP is golden.

Like I said, it doesn't hurt to give it a shot. It wouldn't be list on the libgphoto2 page if it hadn't been tested. The OP has nothing but a little time to lose, and possibly everything to gain.

I have installed CHDK on my M3. This includes an intervallometer which allows exposures up to 20 minutes.

Oh... CHDK.

Forgot all about it.

Yes, it's a good option.

I've never had any issues with CHDK. It is similar to ML, but there are also differences due to the different camera types. AFAIK, ML initially was a port of CHDK to the EOS family.

I am now in the same position, canon M3 but no way to program a series of lights. Did you get a solution to your problem?

Are you on Windows? There appears to be support for the camera on Linux/Macs with Ekos/INDI, via the libgohoto2 library.

I own the M3, and to be honest, you can do a lot better for an astro cam.  Its a great walk around compact for regular use, but the noise and banding has caused issues.  I've placed the m3 as earth bound or other use.  It's pretty dated.

Good luck.

I understand that anything captured by an M3 will never pretend to be astrophotography, but as you say while walking in the neighborhood I like to take some photos of where I’ve been.
