The recurrent nova M31N 2008-21a went off a few hours ago.

The discovery magnitude was 18.6CV.

No sign of an ATel yet but it will surely come soon.

Finder chart and comparison sequence magnitudes available at arxiv.org/pdf/1607.08082

You will have to be quick to measure this one because it will likely be below mag 23 in a week or so.

Paul

I am thrilled that this year's 12a was discovered by Chinese enthusiasts, and I had been monitoring it for a month.

Unfortunately, I missed it at the last minute because I overslept. (I thought of a line from the book "Starlight Nights: The Adventures of a Star-Gazer," which I could tweak a bit to say, "I should take responsibility for my negligence, but I still feel that 12a should show me a bit more understanding. We have been friends for many months, and on countless nights, I guarded it while it slept. Now, I am still observing it, but with a vigilant eye; there is no longer warmth between us.")

Due to the moon, it is difficult for me to continue observing 12a...

Photos from our team taken at 10 UTC on December 13th show the current status of 12a.

I imaged this on the night of 11th, but it wasn't there then.

I imaged it last night remotely from Spain, which had bad weather so I only got 7x5 min exposure.

But I'm confident that I got it. It's really faint (SNR is only 12), but it's in the right spot.

Measured it mag 18.3.

Image info here.

Here's a zoom of the area.

Now down to mag 21 or lower, so it's unlikely most of us can see it again until next year.
