Meade 178ED OTA upgraded for a measly $1200 U.S.!!  astrobuysell:

https://astrobuysell....php?view=78469

He is not selling it with the upgraded focuser.

He claims it is a good scope but, it's a Meade AND it's one of "THOSE" scopes that were nearly all failures.

A club member had one and after at least six trips back to the factory it was deemed unrepairable. Through threats of legal action the entire purchase price plus most of the shipping was refunded. Therefore, it's no surprise to us that the company went belly up, finally. The old man always said that they wouldn't and that Celestron would eventually have the last laugh.

However, IF it is actually a good one we could spring for it, play with it and then sell it off to Chas for that $5K he offered. Heck! We may even be willing to deliver it to him for a few bucks more. BWHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

The above comments seem to jive with those from an Ed Ting review of the meade 178 saga:    https://scopereviews.com/178ed.html

That was a long, long time ago. I was personally involved. Nor was the old man. I think he was working off of the verbal reports from way back when. Plus, at over 70, his memory may be slightly cloudy on the subject. I will chalk it up to the reciting of a fish tale for telescopes. In the end, the telescope was still a dog and it still got sold because it was a dog.

My dad has never liked Meade since its early days. It goes way back to when the original owner and he locked horns over a warranty issue. According to the old man the guy was "less than honorable" and screwed my parents over. Therefore, we have never owned ANY Meade products and never will. At least, not if he has anything to say about it. So far, he's still the Ram Rod around here and that is the rule.

If that scope is actually a good one and the cell was replaced then someone may get a good bargain from it. We would only be interested if it was an immediate flip. We already have more 6" refractors than we can ever use and the gains from a 7" just isn't worth the effort or expenditure. Not to us, anyway.

FWIW

Headed this way! My small Mak collection is complete. This will live on a one-arm DS2000 which is lonely.

Anyone know if the rear port thread is the same as on the 105? Nevermind, answer, yes.

There is something very wrong with that scope. It's like everything is bass ackward. The way the mirror is secured is horrifying! That mix of shroud and trusses is hellish. If you want a tube, use a tube.

Makes me think of something that came from the movie Dark City. An ultra-portable 12" sounds great though.

That telescope scares me. Especially if I were looking at it in the dark.

Tasco 999VR, and if I didn't have access to the collective wisdom of CN members I would bid on it. Fortunately, I scored a 9VR at a garage sale for $5.00 a few months back. Now all I really want or need is the elusive 10VR.

Lovely sand-cast C8 with 8x50 helical finder, "special" coatings, etc - $400:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/276831914568

The corrector could use a bit of cleaning, but otherwise in nice shape.   I find the combination of orange, brown and black to be so pretty when in minty condition like this.

At $409 it's already more than we would pay for it since it would be removed from the mount and moved to something better. Even IF it did have "freaky sharp optics"! LOL

I usually lurk here, would love to find a fun vintage telescope, but I've always made them, not bought them.  I've made some light weight travel reflectors.  I shutter when I see those straps around the struts.  You do that when there is a vibration problem.

Negretti and Zambra brass telecsope in the Phoenix, AZ area $1900.  If it's fake, at least the eyepieces are classic.

It's a 3 inch, but the eyepieces aren't original.

Shopgoodwill has  a unbranded telescope in a trunk

https://shopgoodwill.../item/221497835

Is that a Celestron Super C8? Looks like the owner glued on a mounting block.

That mounting block is a tripod adapter sold by Celestron with instructions on how to defork the C8 and mount it on a (very hefty) tripod. That explains the absence of a mount. The glue is an interesting (and unnecessary) addition.

Nice Original Minty Celestron Ultima C8 with nice accessories right here on CN. These scopes were amazing, I remember having one and always regretted selling it, If I wasn't in the downsizing stage I'd be all over this one and wouldnt be posting it here LOL. https://www.cloudyni...ain-and-extras/

It also appears to be vinyl covered, so the glue is biting on vinyl, not the tube. Argh..

It’s hard to see if the bracket for the drive motor is in the box. It’s the drive motor and bracket that I’d be interested in. Nice mount as well.
