Hello,

I found this old grey brass telescope with an 80 mm objective in Germany. It has massive layers of old grey paint on the brass tubes.

There is also an alloy middle tube section. Interesting is the old tiny focuser with the brass reck. I never saw one like this before. It is 65 cm long.

I wonder what kind of telescope this is? I found no engravings yet.

Michael

At a guess, a military spotting scope of some kind? The gray paint certainly has a naval cast to it, and multiple layers suggest it was in regular use and routinely repainted as per navies everywhere. No markings I take it, even on the objective?

The focuser looks like the ones that old projection lenses used. I've seen eyepieces like that on old binoculars. I think it is a combination of parts from different instruments, quite possibly DIY. If the objective was originally from a spotting scope with a prism assembly to give an upright image, converting it for astro use might involve removing the prism assembly and inserting that aluminium tube to allow for the light path that the prisms would have taken up and to enable an eyepiece in the focuser to reach focus.

All guesses of course !

Be really careful with the focusing.  This won't have any great intrinsic value.  I'd strip the paint off it and polish it.
