As I see it and it is logical, a 6" will be better than a 5"...but it seems that it weighs twice as much and its price is also doubled. I don't know if the gain in details and resolution would be double. It is clear that I would also have to buy a robust mount... I am not sure if all of this would be worth it..., I would have to have both side by side to be able to see it, and this is going to be impossible. I don't know, maybe I should squeeze more out of the Mak 5 and with more time change to a Mak 7 including the change of mount.... why if I changed to a Mak 6", later I would like to change to a 7"? And this would mean two changes... right? I like the Mak, the planetary and lunar images are fantastic.
Thank you
Paul

It’s really an individual decision.  To some the difference in the view in the eyepiece outweighs the extra cost and weight.  To others it’s not.  There is no definitive answer IMHO.

I understand this response.

Maybe the upgrading is too much( new mount, price, weight..)cost  "risk"?

make it easy. What mount do you have? The Skymax 150 easily rides on an NEQ3, the 180 won't and I'm afraid the Bresser 6 neither.
GP or similar at least. (I very much prefer the NEQ3 to the GP)

This sounds like a classic case of aperture fever. Fortunately, it’s not terminal if you stay with Maks.

If I decided on the SW Mak 150... what azimuthal mount with slow motion controls would you recommend?

As one with a variety of maks my preference for a 6" is push-to; mine is on a SV M2C with encoders as SkySafari; this is easy to guide by hand without slow-motion controls.

I tried a Losmandy AZ8 but didn't find the slow-motion controls helpful with any of my 6", 7" or 9". At the image scale of a 7" full GOTO and tracking becomes highly desirable.

Go for it! There’s a big difference, and fifty over sixty years is a lot fewer that the 100s you bluster to have owned. What, 200 SCTs alone you said somewhere!? I actually USED the scopes I’ve had, and most tended to stay around for a while. I also downsized with purpose. I had a systematic collection of classics primarily, that I built up over the years and then sold off with the purpose of moving into a smaller place because it was no longer practical to keep them. Not because I lost interest almost as soon as I got them. I wasn’t just grasping at this and that as in your self-acknowledged HUNT which you stated was your sole purpose. Moreover, I never repeatedly purged to announce the junk in the trunk is gone along with continually whining about my plight, oh woe is me to look for pathetic sympathy.

Do you have a comfortable observing chair that is adjustable?  I always say, a good observing chair something like a Starbound or similar adds 2 inches to any telescope.

Speaking of a 6” Mak, one item I picked up too cheap to pass up was one of the relatively rare Meade 6” Maksutov in its LX65 iteration (dovetail on the side rather than the bottom, LX85 configuration.). In contrast to the plethora of 5” and under  Maks made by Meade they made only a few in the 6” and even less 7” models.

When I got it, I was very pleasantly surprised at how sharp, well built and consistently excellent it was for planetary lunar and I’m puzzled as to why so few of them are around, especially given the flood of smaller Meade Maks and the ubiquitous Meade SCTs.

Any more of them out there?

-- I didn't think there was anything beyond freaky sharp.  So is the heirarcy is freaky sharp, nuts freaky sharp, insane nuts freaky sharp, past insane nuts freaky sharp?   And then the 826 must be ... some unpronouncilbe symbol like prince used to use.  So what you are saying is the SW150 Mak goes to 11?  lol.gif
