I have a 1938 ish Dekarem ser 189---- which I posted about in CN in 2006.

It came with a locked focus & cups.

I got the focus to work & it still works but cups are frozen.

It's has clear lenses & as far a collimation I only have use of my right eye so it doesn't affect me that much.

I just took out my beloved CZJ Monocular 10X 50 Q1 from mid 50's ser 379---- & it's hazy now! Never was 10 or 15 years ago.

I kept it in plastic in its orig leather case. So that's very disappointing. Was it the plastic?

Looking through the back of the monocular it looks different...is it a porro? very angular inside not round. What is that flappy hanging down thing on the upper left?

Anyway guess I am on the hunt for a new OLD set of 10X50 to view the night sky.

I think the 1938 will work but it's clear glass wo coating.

I've seen a few of you have the CZJ 10X50 Jenoptem. Would another CZJ Jenoptem late 50's early 60's multi coated (not Jap) be a good pick?

What is the difference in the Q1? Read it had better optics & probably a single coat blue? Would an older 1945 be OK?

I'm kind of bummed that my late 50's Q1 hazed while my 1938 Dekarem is still nice & clear so those old 40's can be ok???

Well, just bummed & wanted to say hello.

Can you upload a photo without a host site? oooh maybe I saw it

If you are talking about what you described as "the flappy thing" in the 3rd pic? It is a prism that appears to have slightly lifted where it is supposed to sit in the slot of the frame that's meant to be home... It's hard to say if the prism is sitting flat in the slot or slightly lifted, for me it appears that the clip meant to hold the prism in place (unless this binocular used a different method of holding the prism secure) has gone on holiday!undecided.gif   Pat

I'm far from an expert on vintage Zeiss, but I think the oil or grease evaporating inside the binos is often the cause of these "hazes" that appear

Why not go the refurbishing route? If you already have two vintage Zeiss optics you're just risking disappointment by buying a third vintage bino or mono unless you can get a look before buying.

All good advice. I don't know if that flappy thing was always there as I may not have looked that closely at it. It used to work fine.

I bought it about 15 years ago & haven't used it in at least 10 years. Nothing shakes in it so there is no clip that came aprt in my possession but then again I don't know how monoculars are made. It looks different inside than the 1938 Dekarem.

It's an Q1 so it was supposed to have better optics but I suppose it would have to be sent out unless there is someone local can take a look & give an estimate. It's condition is really very good other than the haze & whatever that flappy thing is.

Still I have a renewed interest to look into the sky & getting it fixed will take a while.

Thanks everyone!
