Ed's straightforward, pragmatic approach is a nice counter to the over-exacting perfectionism that pervades much of our hobby. This video encapsulates it nicely.

How many times have I been there rescuing a neglected scope. It is very rewarding when the results are good.

I've always been meaning to put together a full restoration video start to finish, I always forget to. Nice job Ed!

That was a really enjoyable video! I've had my SCT's apart many times, and I've had the secondary on my LX3 re-coated. Collimation is key to getting sharp images - I'd love to have seen the in-focus Airy disk on Ed's example to see how "spot on" the collimation was.

Regardless, great to see another old warrior resurrected from the dirt. Hopefully that LX5 (at least the OTA) can get some action.

A note about dovetails - I de-forked my LX3 and I bought a Vixen plate from Farpoint Astro and it bolted right up and worked out of the box. Now the LX3 rides on my AZ4 or EQ5 mounts (depending on what I'm doing) and I couldn't be happier.

I like Ed's Roland story on cleaning optics. So that's where the Windex idea apparently comes from...

It might also be because Tele-Vue mentions using Windex or Glass Plus in paragraphs 3 and 4 on their cleaning optics page.

Who is Roland?

Roland Christen, maker of telescopes that broke new ground in the 80s. Or, re-broke old, forgotten ground.

Like Elvis, Pele, and Jesus, you have to do something big to get known by one name alone.
