Finally got mayself Star Analyzer 100.

I know that Rspec would be nice but now funds are kind of limited so was wondering if there's free software that is also user friendly/easy to learn.

My candidates so far are:

Vspec

ISIS

Bass

In your experience what is easiest to learn and use?

My expression is that to use Bass you have to join (Google) group. That sounds inconvenient.

Have you used the -FREE- month of RSpec yet? That's what I recommend you do first.

There's a problem. If I try and like it there's a chanche I might want to buy it.

And the key word here was free...

I use ISIS for my slit spectrographs and I have used it with the Star Analyser but I would not recommend it for a beginner. VSpec works similarly to Rspec which was loosely based on it but it can be temperamental. There was a nice simple program written by someone on this forum which might be a good starting point if it can be found. (I forget the name)

I am just about to start using the Star Analyser 100 on my WO 61 and 1600MM camera - looking forward to it!  For processing I would like to do continue to use my main computer which runs using LINUX - the main reason I use linux is for PixInsight.  Can anyone recommend some Linux software that can process the spectra I will be obtaining?  Any help would be much appreciated.  Cheers JIM

Unfortunately the only reasonably beginner friendly programs I know of for the Star Analyser only run on Windows.

There are a couple of software packages for the amateur that run on Linux

Spc audace (Benji Mauclaire)

http://spcaudace.free.fr/

SpecInti (Christian Buil and Valerie Desnoux)

https://solex.astros...ecinti1_en.html

and in principle these should be adaptable to process Star Analyser spectra but  I am not aware of anyone who has used them with the Star Analyser.

I would say the best approach could be to use your linux setup to acquire the spectrum images and then transfer them to a windows program for processing.

This thread might also have some other solutions (eg there was a suggestion there that BASS project might also run on MacOS)

Hi,

I run BASS under Wine on Linux (kubuntu) with no problem. Joining the BASS group is easy, free, and a great source of info. BASS is more intuitive than ISIS. There is a native version of specINTI that runs on Linux.

And, of course, there's always IRAF!

ouch -- ooh, that hurt -- stop -- I was just kidding
