A friend of mine, John Berger, here in CN forums has posted a new dead pixel removal script which i think does an excellent job not only of removing dead pixels but for my noisy images also seems to remove a lot of the noise from my images.

Just to give you an idea on how good this is at removing dead pixels and essentially noise in an image here are two side by side examples.  first with noise and second without.  This is a RAW unedited but STF stretched image of M2.

I should mention this script is not yet signed since we are still both learning our way around creating scripts for PI but here is the link to the repository if anyone wants to add this.

It is really simple to use  There is only one slider bar and it is limited in range from 0.0 to 1.0.  i found a setting of .37 to work for most of my images and a setting of 0.3 seems to work on most images.  Try different settings and let us both know how this works or if you have any suggestions for improvements.

Thanks and Clear Skies and Clean Glass to all!

it's a repository link, you will not be directed to a download page if you press the link; you need to copy and paste the link into Manage Repositories in Pixinsight, Check for Updates and then install

Right click the link in your browser and select copy link. then go into PI and click Resources then Manage Repositories and add this link to the list.  then after you hit OK do a check for updates.  it should then prompt you that there are updates available.  When it downloads the link it may say that the code is not signed, just hit OK and it should download.  Close PI and it will install.  You will find the tool in the Scripts section under Utilities.

It does seem to clean up the image very nicely.

Is a dead pixel the same as a cold pixel?

If one were to use this does one then not use cosmetic correction?

Is your example a stacked image or a single raw frame?

I think a dead and cold pixel are similar if not the same.  As for CC, not sure.  I used CC when stacking the images used for demonstration and the DPZ was used afterwards.  I will have to try it without using CC and see what happens.

I tried the script on a couple images. It works well for its function. However, I see that it took away a good bit of detail. YMMV
