As I am sure you are aware, High Point Scientific bought the remnants of Meade, Coronado & Orion and they have begun selling those items. According to their description:

"Starting February 12th, we will be launching a new, out of this world, sale every 4 or 5 days. Some sales will have extensive inventory, while others will not. Once a product sells out it’s gone, and no backorders will be accepted."

On Feb 12th, they began with some SCTs and today (Feb 14), it appears that the sale is of 4 models of CanyonView binoculars.

Meade 8 x 32 CanyonView ED Binoculars - $79.95

Meade 10 x 32 CanyonView ED Binoculars - $79.95

Meade 8 x 42 CanyonView ED Binoculars - $89.95

Meade 10 x 42 CanyonView ED Binoculars - $99.95

Video by Meade: https://www.youtube....h?v=Xy0o5AINVlo

High Point describes this sale as the "Binocular Deal of the Year!". LOL, okay sure pal.

I searched this forum but didn't see much discussion of them.

Does anyone own a pair of these CanyonView binos? What are your thoughts?

I didn’t see any. Back during the “auction” there was a photo of a pallet of Meade MasterClass 8x42s; I wonder when those are going on sale?

The 8x32 looks like a decent deal for a pair of walking around bins.

thank you for that Doug as I'm still in the dark despite jumping through the hoops to get a view of the sale in advance after signing up. Much appreciated, Pat

Yeah, if I didn’t already have a 8x32 Diamondback HD that I really like I’d jump on that deal.

Dang, I was really hoping for the opportunity to snag a 10x42 MMC if there were any still around when HPS bought the old Orion stock (I think they might have sold out before Orion went under though...). Too bad. These are probably worth the price, but I have no use for any of them in particular.

I wouldn’t give up hope yet.  HPS is doing a limited release approach to the sale items.  HPS may be holding on to the most desirable items until the end in hopes the other items are cleared out.

I have ordered Meade Canyonview 10x42.

As a glasses wearer the stated 17mm eye relief should   allow easier use.

The fields of view on these aren't so wide. Maybe they have a smaller, but sharper and flatter field, or maybe that's just the price/value showing.  They do have ED glass, FMC and phase coating, but I do wonder how low of a spec they were built to. This may be a great deal for someone who doesn't have that class of binoculars, but they may also be ho-hum, barely there, you get what you pay for.

Years ago I bought some Meade Montanas on clearance, and they are fantastic!

While I wouldn't claim it as a definitive review, both of the meade binoculars tested (Canyonview and Masterclass) being at the bottom of the ratings isn't particularly encouraging - https://www.allabout...x42-binoculars/

The appeal of these binoculars back in the auction was the likelihood of them going for cheap. The current 55% off that HPS is asking? Not quite so interesting in my opinion.

Considering that orion HAD many, many binocular models, are they likely to be sold in a sale of their own considering HPS made one line of meade models (canyon view) a one day sale? If so there might be many sales slated in the future (being the optimist here) Or there might be another way to monetize a bulk sale later?

While they may be at the bottom in those ratings, they are less than 100 dollars. most of those are 200 u to 650. While I will agree no way at their original price. 99 bucks is attractive

I picked up the 8x42’s. Needed a lightweight pair for summer backpacking trips and $89 was enough to trigger a need for them. Lol

I pulled the trigger as well. They're probably the best 100$ binos in the market right now. Since the original price was ~200$ they might be comparable to something like nikon's p7 or even the vortex diamondback. I doubt they are really competitive against 300$ binos as the sales blurb says.

It looks to me like they are selling the stuff less likely to need warranty claims. I would expect the better orion binos to show up but the lesser models will probably end in a dumpster or ebay through another seller.

Hi,

I asked them about 50 mm objective binoculars, and they replied they dont have any that “exceed” 50 mm. So, I replied that so they have 50mm? No..shucks!

Clear Skies,

Paul

I ordered the 8x42. At $100, I figured you can't really go wrong. If nothing else I can use them for outreach.

I also jumped the gun

I wanted to upgrade my 7x50 $100 binoculars so quite some time

8x42 seems like a good compromise: more reasonable exit pupil + it is much lighter (24oz << 32 oz of my current one)

I do not expect them to be better then other brands ED glass or HD or any other middle range binoculars (hey, they went out of business for a reason, no?)

But for this price it is not a bad deal.

I agree this deal is not a "steal" but it might be just good enough

the only problem I also think High Point Scientific will wait for the best items to sell last... so I might regret buying these :)

I will report whether they are better or worse then "usual $100 Nikon ones"

This is a exceptional deal. This is priced better than any Chinese offbrand ED Bino on eBay

:waytogo:

I bought a pair of 7x42  Meade Montanas used before the sale.  I paid $150..,  New at the time, they were $300.., Then they went on sale for $150.. I still have them.  They are very good binos and made in Japan..

The quality of construction is more important than ED glass.

Having read this, it does make me want to check out the Celestron Trailseeker ED. However, the birding test is quite a bit different from astronomy. After I determining that it fits my face, I care about the optics so much(in detail), and finally "not-too-uncomfortable" ergonomics. I suspect this test cared about ergonomics and weight, and different optical properties. For example, I would care that the roof prism line isn't visible on bright stars, and the CA on the moon and bright objects is well controlled. I also want the edges to not turn to mush, or be distracting.   So I wouldn't be too worried about this review. If I didn't have too many binoculars near this size, I would be really tempted.

And those Meade Montana 7x42s were a steal when they were on clearance.  Just a bit of rolling ball distortion was their only fault, and that's not too bad.

So as soon as you guys get, them, put them through their paces, and let the rest of us know how they fare.

I wonder when the Orion BTs will go on sale? They cost less than equivalent ap Obies and now there could be a significant price cut!

Oh, that would be awesome.  Also maybe the 20x80 EDs in the action. But I'm curious about the 8x42 Meade Masterclass.   So in most the the roof prism binoculars I own, there is some false color during the day in high contrast situations, moreso than my porros, whether the roofs have ED glass or not, it seems. Is this a function of mid-price roofs, or a flaw that all roofs have?

I don't know of any reason why roofs would be more susceptible to CA than porros, practically or theoretically. Also, are you sure you aren't noticing lateral CA (color will tend to be on the "leading" edge of objects as you move them toward the edge of the FOV, instead of all around the object throughout the FOV). I'm not particularly sensitive to CA myself, but when I have noticed it it has always been lateral color. My suspicion is that when someone sees false color in binos it is probably lateral color 99% of the time (completely made up stat...). If that's the case, neither ED glass or the prism design is likely to be relevant at all. Lateral CA is typically introduced (to a noticeable degree at least) at the eyepieces.
