Pete:

Howdy neighbor!

Several members of the NHAS have experience with this issue. Reach out to them. Ed Ting is especially experienced with shipping as well as a few others. I seem to remember an issue with a Meade 178ED that made many trips back to the factory. We live in the Walpole area which is a bit of a distance from you, I believe. However, if you need help, the old man and I are willing if any of the club members cannot.

FWIW

They would go out of center just looking at them.

That is a given. Having the OTA and all arrive in one piece was the challenge. That was done successfully several times. Meade did redesign the lens cell but, it was too late because they got rid of the scope before that happened. Our house never gave a hoot because we never would own ANY Meade product, anyway. That was the rule set forth by the Old Man.

I didn't picture you as a dumpster diver!!!

Peter

LOL! Only for stuff I need. I don’t generally do exploratory dives. Where there’s a will, there’s a way!

I have done the diving thing as well.   the window   awnings place has many great boxes and I have double boxed and triple boxed scopes, guitars and good violins.   Over packing is the key.

Zen Mart taught me a trick of reinforcing all the corners on the outer boxes..... I have saved boxes from things shipped here    Also    Kogi sent the FC-76 to me from Japan in a boxed framed in another box now with built in support frames...very impressive

But we are talking about an AP  6 inch here      so I lean towards the outer 1/2 inch plywood suggestion above

I had this outfit wooden crate and ship my vintage 1992 AP1200DA mount to Astro-Physics...Maryland to Illinois and back. Incredibly professional and first rate...I slept like a baby during the entire process. They are a nationwide network; see if they have something near you.

Palletized and shipped LTL freight in a simple wooden crate.  Just like you did my mount and pier. wink.gif   A pallet can be picked to more than match the length.

The drop issues with package carriers goes away, and is now primarily limited to errant forks shocked.gif

This is the shipping method Craters and Freighters used for my mount...LTL freight. The crate small palletized to Illinois and back.

Why didn't you fly up for the mount?? And did it arrive safe and sound yet??

It arrived safely on Friday. Alas, I’m in DC… Stephanie checked it out and it looks like it suffered no indignities on the trip waytogo.gif

OK, I'll share these pictures. I sold my very large spectrohelioscope. I shipped it from Missouri Ozarks to California. I used a 4' x 8' pallet, and made a 4' x 8' x 3' tall box on it. It weighed 1700 pounds. I used 2x2 corners for the 5/8" thick plywood, and 2x4 uprights every 2 feet as well as 3 in the middle of the crate. I added 2x4s on top of the uprights to keep anything they put on the lid from crushing. It made it just fine.
