Just completed this drawing from observations made on 2-14. My plan was to draw crater Condercet and the immediate surroundings.  Well things got out of hand and ended up sketching the entire eastern half of Mare Crisium.

IMG 6939

Spent about an hour and a half on Condercet and the immediate area. It is the largest crater in the sketch. A very striking place.  Then instead of calling it a night kept working my way outwards. Another couple hours at it and called it.

This is my first major effort and also using black paper (184 pound Strathmore) and white and black charcoal pencils.  Blending stumps used a bunch.

The topography of this area really something. The "bay" area to the left of Condercet and the mountains to the north stunning.

Regards,

John

Glad you got carried away John! I remember not long ago you posted that you needed to zero in on one crater or feature at a time šŸ˜‚. Well you certainly handled the larger view very well indeed. Beautiful rendering of this complex terrain. I’m thinking you were likely a little bushed by the time you called it. All that concentration is hungry work!

John,

This is a very fine sketch of the southeasten corner of Mare Crisium and the features there.

I struggled with this when I started lunar sketching; especially with graphite on white paper but with black paper you can move more quickly and you are sketching the sunlit parts instead of just the shadows which you are emphasizing using graphite or charcoal on white paper.

frank :)

Appreciate the kind words.

The next time I am out going to have to force myself to one crater. LOL

This sketch confirms black paper the way to go. My next task is to work on finer details. One thing I did was learn how to properly sharpen charcoal pencils by watching a You Tube piece.  Seems simple however that was a big help. The other was watching some Mary McIntyre videos. She has some content where it is time lapse drawing and then a couple where she goes step by step. Thanks to her!
