This is a screenshot of my first non live stacked image using the ASIair built in DSO stacking with bias, dark, and flat masters. This is unprocessed and very slightly cropped from my Bortle 8 backyard. I used a Baader UHC-S filter and plan to try getting some more time on it with just a UV/IR filter. 479x30sec (just shy of 4 hours). What are your thoughts?

The posted image is too small to make any comment on.  Do you have a link to a larger image?

If you live in Bortle 8 then I would suggest an Optolong l-Ulimate filter instead. The UHC filters for broadband don't work anymore due to LED lighting and won't produce good results. For broadband targets like galaxies, the only effect "filter" in a light polluted environment is to drive somewhere dark.

What you can do is take as many (short) subs (like 30-60s) as you can with the UHC filter and then take about an hour or so of 10-20s subs with the IR/UV filter. If you drop everything in google drive, dropbox etc I can take a stab a processing for you and list the steps I took.

I’m a bit limited because I don’t have a computer. I am doing everything on my iPad for now. I have watched lots of videos on processing and everyone of the options seems daunting to someone who’s not very good with computers.

Understood. It's definitely not an easy hobby for sure. I would suggest either an Optolong l-Extreme or l-Ultimate filter to get better results for your nebula images.

I have heard great things about those filters but they are a it out of my comfort zone as far as price. I have seen a lot of good reviews of this filter. I know the ones you recommend will do better on the LP.

What iPad do you have? Is it a Pro? If so, what model? I ask for a reason...

BTW, that's not a bad image for just a UHC filter in Bortle 8 skies!!!

A lot of people seem to like the SvBony SV220 dual band filter and it is keenly priced.

If you are price conscience then the 1.25" filters will work with your camera, will be cheaper than the 2" filters and will give the same results (for the same brand and filter type of course). Look for Ha/O-III dual band (or triband) that are either 5nm or even better (and unfortunately more expensive) 3nm bandwidth.

It’s an older Air2.
Thanks, I hope to get several more hours on it soon.

You mean an Air 2nd generation? In that case, never-mind… If you had a iPad Air M2, then I would say get UTM on your iPad and run a virtual Linux machine with Siril for your processing.

I have also heard a lot of good things about that filter so I bought one just this past week -  no comment on how it works yet as I would need clear skies for that. But they are cheap and seem to hold up against other filters well enough.

A CN user just posted here about a new AI model they developed for auto-stretching/processing - you could try uploading the file your ASI produces (ideally a .fit and not the .jpg if possible) to the website and see what happens. I have not tried it myself yet but looks very interesting and does processing w/o the need for you to have a computer.

I am going to stick with 2" filters since everyone knows I will get a bigger sensor eventually. I am hoping they put a newer sensor in the 294MC Pro that gets rid of the amp glow.

I have watched lots of videos on processing and everyone of the options seems daunting to someone who’s not very good with computers.

firstly the shot is quite good for someone starting out in AP. well done. waytogo.gif

I am also not good with computers. I did not know how to copy and paste until recently.

I bought an old Mac, and use that for everything. Plus side is that it was cheap and has multiple drives, so I can collect tons of data.

downside is the older operating systems cant run the latest software so its somewhat limiting.

Processing is a genuine nightmare in my opinion for those of us who are NOT computer geeks, as everything to do with processing is computer based, and assumes competency.

I have watched hundreds of Pixensight tutorials, and doubt I could ever operate that software successfully. Far too complicated for me.

Funny thing is Pixinsight wont even RUN on my old Mac, as the developers with-hold older versions, so that you cant even get them, and therefore force you to buy more expensive and modern computers, that many people might not be able to afford.

in view of all this I just use the simple software, such as Siril and Affinity. Siril will do the things you need to do and relatively simply.

Affinity is real good, for colour manipulation, and the Macros by James Ritson amp it up another level for AP processing.

Both the mentioned software will run on older and more affordable computers, and the Mac I am using now is a 2010 model.

experts will always suggest the latest and greatest, but if your budget does not go that far, don't eliminate considering an older machine.

Good Luck Mr Rim Racer. smile.gif

Thanks, I have a coworker that is also fairly new to AP that has been using Siril so I may just have him give me a walkthrough once I get a computer.

I just happened to find that filter on sale for just over $100 so I ordered it. While it may not have that narrowest cutoffs I am sure it is much better than my current UHC.
