Ernest’s guide, translated from Russian, to the how’s and why’s of selecting eyepieces as presented on his website astro-talks.ru

Well worth the time to digest for anyone seeking to understand how our eyes interact with our eyepieces and telescopes and how those interactions can be used to guide our eyepiece choices.

Yup you can spend hours (days?) slurping up all of his very delicious equipment reviews.

Plus he has much more fundamental topics that EVERY observer should peruse and know of by heart.

That site plus Vla Sacek site Telescope optics.net is also a site worthy to spend long hours at for more scientific discussions.

The post that your link goes to is an English translation of a Russian translation of Al Nagler's article on choosing telescope magnifications interspersed with comments by Ernest.  So, it's actually Al Nagler's guide with commentary by Ernest.  Saying this is Ernest's guide is like saying the Talmud is the Torah.

It's interesting to see what Ernest agrees with and what he doesn't agree with, as well as other information he provides.  But this is Al Nagler's guide.

Still good information!  grin.gif

I had seen that Ernest credited Al Nagler for large portions of his discussion, as is appropriate, but Al’s guide likewise is a discussion of information derived from earlier sources interspersed with commentary of his own. But as you point out it is the information, and not the provenance, that’s important.

This is even more like the Talmud - Torah analogy.   The Talmud is actually mostly a commentary on the Mishnah, which is a synopsis of the Torah.

Mike, as is often the case I’m well out of my depth so I defer to your deeper knowledge smile.gif .
