Found this unusual Carl Wetzlar 60mm spotting scope

At first glance it had an eyepiece marked  20x60 attached.

This has the focus wheel and a sliding dew shield.

The objective is protected by a "cone shaped" plastic cap which fits snuggly, it is designed not to fall off.

Has anyone seen one of these before?

The objective is clean no scratches the coatings look good.

Some dust but this is not an issue.

The unusual thing about this spotting scope, I discovered 4 more eyepieces inside the cone, nice surprise !!

They are marked, 15x60, 30x60, 40x60 and 60x60.  The 20x60 eyepieces was already installed on the scope

The eyepieces screw onto the base, the base screws to the white cone and the cone is used as the spotting scopes lens cap.

So far, I looked through the scope with the installed 20x60 and my test Hydro generator/pole about 2 kms away looks good.

And here is the scope with the eyepieces safely stored in the lens cone.

Finally the cone used as a lens cap with the eyepieces stored inside.

.

I have never seen this setup before.

It also came with a Bushnell tripod, will have to take some images and post.

Made up brand name to sound sort of German/Switzerland origin to sell optics from K-mart and Sears . Haven’t heard too much about spotting scopes , nifty eyepiece holder .

That is so Cherman - what a cool scope! Coating look beautiful for that age.

I cannot remember how Wetzlar stood among the Leicas and Zeisses of the world. I seem to remember enlarger lenses that were highly praised.

"Carl Wetzlar" are unfortunately not German. It was a house brand for optics sold through Canada's Eatons department stores. Some, especially older examples of binoculars and telescopes, were sourced in Japan, others elsewhere. I've seen scopes made by both Towa and Tanzutsu, there may have been others. Most I have seen and/or owned have been well made, but of variable optical quality, from fair to very good.

Huh, Wetzlar, Germany is the home base of Leica, and there are lenses stamped Carl Leitz Wetzlar. I thought there were several series of lenses for these cameras but maybe not.

……and that’s exactly why the name was cobbled together . It sounds like it is somehow associated with those reputable optical brands .

Using the Hydro transformer about 2 kms away I did a test and ran through all the eyepieces.  Images are actually very good.

Lower power eyepieces have a 50-degree FOV, and the higher eyepieces are around 45-degrees

The images are right side up just like binoculars ... (not mirror reversed)

The max magnification with the supplied eyepieces is 60x so the 60mm objective has no problems

It is all metal construction, the only plastic piece on this scope is the white cone shaped objective cap.

This is a well-designed spotting scope will also have to test it at night.

Probably Ortho eyepieces.
