The family is planning a trip to Argentina in August to visit close relatives. On the bucket list is a trip to Patagonia with stops in El Calafate and in Ushuaia, dark skies all around. I haven't been able to find much in terms of astrotourism there. Does any one have any experience/suggestion for these type sof activities there?

Astrotourism in Patagonia?

I will not help you much but two years ago, in December, we stopped for couple of days in Ushuaia on our way to Antarctica. So one night I look up and I saw Orion, but it was upside down! So expect unexpected! I could not look up at night sky in Antarctica because, at that time of the year, Sun was up 24/7.

I would bring a 50-70mm binocular just in case you get some clear skies down there.

I have an Orion 80mm-ST that I brought down last trip and left with family and am planning to take it with us to Patagonia.

One thing for sure: the more astro and non-astro tourism there is in Patagonia, the less valuable it will become as an astro destination.

Can't say I'd heard of astrotourism before, certainly intrigued now!

There is a star party in Argentina in their fall. I think this year's edition is the end of March. The Explore Scientific Global Star Party (I think it is the 167th one) just had a guest on giving the details and contact info. Held in the mountains at 1500 meters west of Buenos Aires almost to the Chille border. The broadcast has details and contact info. Might be worth noting for a future trip.
The segment starts just after the 2hr 13 min. Just after the Pranvera Hyseni presentatation.

That sounded interesting but I couldn't get the link to work.

Ed Ting just posted a video about his trip in Patagonia. Was this post inspired by that?

Hello Domerman, I hadn't heard about Ed Ting's post. Every year we take a trip to Argentina to visit family. Now that the kids are getting a little older we are starting to travel around the country a bit more. Last year we went to Valle de la Luna and to Talampaya where the skies are great adn the geology is amazing. I brought down a small 80mm refractor and left it with my in-laws. This year we are thinking about a trip to the Calafate glacier (while you are still allowed to walk on it) and to Ushuaia (penguins). I'm certainty bring the 80mm along, but in August (winter), those places are rather quiet. I was hoping to find an astrotourism event as a possible activity for us.

Maybe try the link again. I just clicked on it to test, and it worked on my tablet.

Yes, it's working, Thanks! Boy, he is very Argentine in his terminology and the way he describes the geography.
