What is AstroHopper?

It is free and open-source application for sky navigation that utilizes smart phone sensors to find targets in the night sky easily. By attaching a smart phone to the scope you can convert your scope to "push-to" scope with ease.

App: https://artyom-beili...strohopper.html

Manual: https://artyom-beili....io/manual.html

Project Sources on Github: https://github.com/a...eilis/skyhopper

Changelog for 1.0.13

- Added option to keep the screen on. Thanks to contribution by RichardHum

Known limitations it may not work on iOS when the app is started from "home screen" - known issue in Safari

I just started using it and it works like a charm. I stuck one of those car phone magnets to my AT80ED.

Apparently I always seem to think I need to point lower than I actual need to so even with objects I know how to find myself it comes in real handy!
Saves me a load of time and bending over to look through the Telrad.

The magnet does not seem to mess up my location accuracy but I still find myself using the "by Hand" option and it has been eerily accurate. Dead center for most searches.

I'm using a wide 3.5° to 4.5° FOV in the eyepiece so even if it was a bit off I'd see it in the field of view. No need so far as the accuracy has been awesome!

Thanks for such a wicked user friendly app. Oh, and it's super fun to use!

My wife and I updated our phones a couple weeks ago. Mine a SG24 and her a SG25. Included in the deal were two new Samsung Galaxy Tablets. Also, I was able to keep my old SG21 phone which I used before for AstroHopper (download), with good success. Now neither my old nor new phone I can get AstroHopper to work close to accurate. With my wife’s phone it seems to work, and also on my new Tablet.

I did notice her phone and my Tablet took a few seconds for AstroHopper to get the correct coordinates for the GPS. My old or new phone just sits there not applying the latitude or longitude coordinates. In fact both phones show the wrong sky or constellations for the time of night exactly the same.

Is there something with both my old phone and new phone I can do or look for to resolve this? As I said, my old SG21 worked fine with AstroHopper download prior to getting the new phone.

Thanks

Karl

Did you validate coordinates and UTC time in settings (go to the bottom of the page there is this information)?

You need to allow browser to access your geolocation and make sure time zone configuration is correct to the UTC time is indeed UTC time.

And finally if for some reason you can't get correct coordinates (lack of service etc) you can override them manually

Yep, I waited for a while, and the latitude and longitude settings still say unknown. UTC is showing correct, and the phone compass is also correct. Override doesn't work. I'm confused as my wife's phone and my Tablet takes a couple seconds and then shows the coordinates, and the sky is correct. I was told my old phone would still work, as it did before with AstroHopper, but now that phone shows the sky wrongly as the new phone. Weird.

Override doesn't work.

What do you mean?

What do you mean?

I put in the numbers, and still nope.

I guess my question is if there is something about switching to a new phone? Is it correct that the old phone which I used AstroHopper before should still work with the download I put in months ago? Why both my wife's new phone and my new Tablet, AstroHopper does work (no need to use override with either)? Is there something in my new phone I need to check for AstroHopper to work? As I mentioned the compass and UTC are fine.

Thanks

Karl

What do you mean?

Okay, I got it to work through the Samsung Internet app, instead of Google search. Again weird. Will be trying it later tonight on my 12" f/4 dob.
