Hey astro and all you science enthusiasts!

I'm excited to share a project I've been working on: a completely free spectroscopy app designed to work with any smartphone-mounted spectroscope.

Feature.png

I noticed a real lack of solid apps for those using DIY or affordable commercial spectroscopes. Many existing options either over-process the data or lack essential control. So, I decided to build something better.

What makes this app different?

- Raw Sensor Data: No camera post-processing! Get the most accurate, linear data possible.

- Precise Exposure Control: Say goodbye to clipping! Fine-tune exposure for optimal results.

- Manual Focus: Essential for calibration.

- Import/Export: Import local images and export data in CSV format (including calibration and cropping info).

- Simple UI: Easy to use, even for beginners.

- Cross-Platform: Available on Android and iOS.

If you're into spectroscopy, whether for education or just as a hobby, I think you'll find this useful. I'm really looking for feedback, so please give it a try and let me know what you think!

Thanks!

I just install it on my iPhone 14. No issues so far. The app is simple to use. I will report back when I use it with my grating.

Quick test with a 1800 l/mm grating, I like the result. It show two distinct peaks which make sense.

Suggestions:

it is quite difficult to know if the spectral line is horizontal when taking photo. Maybe a line on the screen will help with this.

With small spectrum area, it is difficult to define a small but precise enough ROI. Can we zoom in to the image ?

Great app, I love it.

Hey! Thanks so much for the awesome feedback! I really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

I'm actually already working on that first suggestion! The next build will have a customizable preview grid to help you line up the spectral line perfectly. You'll be able to tweak the grid's rows and columns to whatever you like, or just turn it off by setting both to zero in the Settings.

About the zoom, I totally get why that's important, especially for getting those super precise ROI selections on smaller spectrum areas. That one's a bit trickier to get right, since I need to make sure it works smoothly across all sorts of Android and iOS devices, and factor in things like optical zoom too. It will require a good amount of time to implement properly. I'll definitely prioritize it if there's enough interest in the app from users, so please keep letting me know what you'd like to see!

I'm so glad you're enjoying the app! Your feedback is super helpful in making it even better.

Hi!

Nice app - I gave it a quick test with a handheld spectroscope by Sheliak and an iPhone 12 Mini – seems to work nice, although it is hard to calibrate the spectrum due to the small image.

Thank you for your work!

Do you recommend any spectroscope to use with it?
