Got a new 24 Panoptic and it has no undercut.

New 24 Panoptic

That's an interesting change. I've just had a look at TeleVue's website and the product photo for the 24mm Pan has also been updated to show a smooth-sided nosepiece.
I checked their other eyepieces and other than the new Type 7 Naglers, the 24 Pan is the only one showing this change.

Is nothing sacred? What will keep it from falling out of the focuser? It will flatten out collets, screws won't have anything to grab hold of, the extra weight of the lower barrel will create balance issues, disco might make a comeback...

If the nose pieces simply unthread, perhaps TV will offer the newer ones for sale at a reasonable price.

Is this a result of the response to their poll?
Will this spread to Tele Vue's other eyepieces?
Will they expand their market to a whole new group of undercut-intolerant astronomers?
Will existing customers replace their TV eyepieces with new undercut-free versions?
Will the classifieds be inundated with the old undercut versions at bargain prices?

I think we will need to wait for both types to appear on the used market to ultimately find out what cost is placed on the models with vs. without undercuts.
I would think an actual dollar amount for specific models, or just a percentage difference should emerge.

It has JAPAN engraved on the other side and no, the top cap doesn't stay on.
LOL, some things never change.

Bought it from Astromart classifieds, so it's second hand but was never used.

Unexpected but very nice!
Now we will be able to differentiate between newer production and older production models.
But does the cap stay on
?
I don't own a 24mm Panoptic but I have never had trouble with TeleVue caps staying on. With the 2 inches, the smaller diameter cap fits over the folded down eye cup. With the 1.25 inch Type 5 and Type 6 Naglers, the cap fits over the unfolded down eye cup..

Looked at the 24 Pan on the Agena website and it appears to show a smooth barrel, might want to call before ordering as like you say, there may still be some old stock around.

Are they relocating their production to Japan? That’s some double news!

No idea, but if they convert to smooth barrels on some of their other eyepieces, I'll likely be getting a few more TV eyepieces.

Jon, that's funny.
I couldn't resist.
Undercuts haven't bothered me in terms of hanging up but I do like to pull the eyepiece back when using a barlow to gain maybe 10% more magnification. Undercuts make that more difficult.
