Hi!

Can I observe the sun with my 40 mm Lunt after a deleted ealon filter on the front of the telescope?

Is it safe?

Can I take pictures this way?

I would like to take a picture in white light, that's why I have such an idea.

Thanks!

Paul

No. You need a white light filter or Herschel wedge to do that.

You could get a rough WL image with the scope by just tuning it completely off band. For example, I took this once with my PST:

NO!!! That Ealon and Diagonal filters OUT the DANGEROUS LIGHT that will damage camera sensors and EYESITE! I think you want to multi purpose the Lunt 40 scope and use a White Light filter Solar Filter? I would get a SVBONY SV503, $330 and then get that Solar Filter..

So the Lunt is ONLY a Solar Telescope when used correctly. SAFTEY IS MOST IMPORTANT.

As Gary states you can just tune the etalon off-band for a (red visually) continuum image, and requires no additional expenditure.

Removing the etalon and blocking filter will allow use with a Baader AstroSolar film objective filter (and a normal star diagonal for the eyepiece or camera). A Baader Continumm filter can be added to the diagonal or eyepiece for a bit more clarity if chromatic aberration or atmospheric dispersion needs to be dealt with.

I personally think a 1.25 inch Herschel wedge would be overkill for use with the "naked" LS40 OTA, unless you want to later use it with a larger instrument.
