When I was looking for a 5-6" refractor, I found it helpful seeing size comparison photos that included telescopes similar in size to ones that I had already owned. I'd like to contribute back with my own size comparison photo in case others are considering telescopes similar in size.

If you have comparison photos of your own, I would be interested in seeing them (and perhaps others might too).

Below is the Borg 55FL operating at ~f/6, the AT102EDL f/7 and the SVX127D f/8, all aligned at the end of the focuser drawtube (the photo perspective causes them to seem offset).

Dew shields retracted, with a 4x6 photograph for reference:

Borg 55FL, AT102EDL, SVX127D - Dew Shields Retracted

Dew shields extended:

The Borg 55FL at f/4.5 with my old WO Megrez 72FD at f/6:

Get someone to hold the 127D........then it looks even bigger.

Yes. Or include something else in the picture for scale, a pet perhaps. How big are the floor planks? 2"x24", 4"x48", or 8"x96" shocked.gif

Ya'll rock, and you're saving me $$$. When I hear 100mm refractor, I think "that's only an inch bigger than my AT72EDII" and feel tempted for the better views. Then I view these photos and you know what, I like my 72 a lot more now! As far as I'm concerned keep these photos coming. You're helping tons of refractor newbies like me be realistic about sizes!

It would be interesting to list the weights of each scope as well, although these would be easy to look up.

Great idea for a thread - very useful for those considering a larger refractor. Here’s my TSA-120 next to a TV85 (with Solarscope etalons and blocking filter, so looks very long), Tecnosky F/6 60ED, and a random Tak Epsilon 130d, which should know better than to sneak into the refractor forum.

For reference, the TSA is 6.7kg - just over 14lb - about as light and compact as an F/7.5 triplet gets with 120mm aperture.

Weight is an important factor. The additional weight of a triplet or quad, especially as apertures go over 4", should not be discounted.

Well here are my scopes. First is a StellaMaria 125ED f7.8 doublet in CF that weight just 12.8lbs. Middle is a AT115EDT f7 triplet that weighs 13lbs + and lastly is a ES ED 102 Essential Series weighing in at 12lbs but seems lighter.
