Hi folks,

For anyone looking for an opportunity to photograph an asteroid passing through a deep sky target over the next few nights, asteroid Ino will be passing near the Leo triplet.  Given that these are moonless nights, it may be a good opportunity:

I’ve enjoyed capturing asteroids, passing by or through deep sky targets in the past, but I have clouds the next few nights, so I’ll miss this opportunity.

Here are two examples of where I’ve done it in the past:

Thisbe passing through the Jellyfish nebula:

Carnegia passing through a planetary nebula:

Happy hunting,

Steven

Got quite lucky, didn't even know that Ino passed by there until I checked my subs!

Very nice!

And must thank you for the heads up.

Was just looking for interesting targets, because the galaxies are boring - at least without SN tongue2.gif

For couple of nights I have imaged asteroids, making measurements and animations.

Last night I imaged 1263 Varsavia because it has realtively short rotation period.
My observation (you can change the language).

But this would be cool to combine asteroid animation with well known dso object.

By the way there's a fainter (mag 14.7) 783 Nora asteroid right behind Ida.

Are these all asteroids: https://imgur.com/a/KTsDB29 ? What telescope did you use?

No, they are hot pixels. I forgot to clean those.

There are specs in the web page I linked. But the scope was plain old C8 @ 1100m.

I have photographed this Leo galaxy pair so many times that I won't image it, unless a couple of asteroids hit the frame :).
It was difficult to get a flat field, even though I took all the calibration photos.
Well, imaging the deep sky with a planetary camera has its own challenges.

173 Ino brightness mag 12.6
783 Nora brightness mag 14.6

Here is another opportunity for galaxies being photobombed by asteroids:

I got lucky and captured 173 Ino on the night of March 22nd.  I wasn't aware of the object until after I noticed the smudge on my luminance frames.  Video can be found here: https://app.astrobin.com/i/ivl9i3. The video also shows a tiny object trailing closely behind Ino.
