One (very little) gripe that I have with my TV 85 is that the lever that tightens the clamshell rattles around and has slightly marked the black anodised finish on the clamshell. I guess I should fit a rubber sleeve of some sort around the lever to stop this. Anyone else found this ?

John,

I put a piece of heat shrink on my TV-85 clamp tab.

In contrast to jimtaka, I’ve been a Tele Vue guy for the past quarter century or so, and am now awaiting my first Tak, an FC1000DZ that I ordered during their sale. I’m looking forward to comparing views, especially against my NP-101is. I told myself that something would have to get sold, but I might not wind up believing myself.

Taks and TVs make great companion scopes, as they could not be more different. Almost every aspect of the TeleVue design philosophy contrasts with Takahashi. Yet they both hold up among the best small to medium refractors in the market. Enjoy your DZ.

Do you mean you were lucky enough to have Al sign your Pronto?

Yes thanks for catching my typo.  To late to edit it

Congrats Billy. I owned a Pronto (same 70mm x 480mm objective) for a number of years and used it a lot. It was a fun little scope that produced very nice views up to 150X. A little false color was there but not enough for me to find objectionable, and that was well compensated by the nice sharp views. I’ve never had a Ranger but I do have a TV60 with a similar slip-and-lock draw tube and 1.25” helical focuser which I find quite useful and precise. It will also be make a nice daytime spotter for you.

Thanks for your comment, Highburymark.  I have been hoping, quietly to myself, that their differences will mean that the overlap starts and ends with aperture.  My order was supposed to ship by March/April, so I have asked the vendor if I might be able to pick it up at NEAF.  If that happens, I will accept full responsibility for at least ten nights of clouds in the Northeast.
