Hello everyone,

excuse me if I post this thread in the wrong topic but this is my first post. Today at around 3:36am (UTC +1) I spottet two phenomena (marked in red) that I cannot explain to myself and I was wondering if any of you have a clue what they are (Location: 47° 14′ 17″ N, 9° 35′ 54″ E, Azimuth ca. 165°, Altitude ca. 40°).

Best regards and thank you for your time.

G'day Gold Cobra,

Welcome to Cloudy Nights! smile.gif

Is this how they looked to the naked eye?

To me, the one on the left looks like a live rocket plume, and the one on the right looks like a cloud. A rocket plume will slowly move with the orbit of the rocket…and the cloud will move and dissipate.

But if they're only in the image, they could just be reflections off a lens surface or the internal workings of the optical train…

They look like classic lens flares, which make sense given the presence of strong sources of light to the left of the camera, off-frame.

Thx for the replies guys :)

@david_od lense flare would make sense to me, if there would be more spots in the picture. And why are they different colors and shapes?

@BQ_Octantis you could not see either one with the naked eye, I was just trying out some setting when I spottet them. I took multiple pictures about 10min apart and it doesn't seem like either moved at all...

Lens flares for sure—they'll only move with the direction you point the lens. To prevent them, you have to block the incoming stray light from directly entering or hitting the lens. A flocked lens hood works wonders for this.

Cheers,

BQ
