https://global.canon...ll-frame sensor.

Any thoughts?

Possibly with a specialized flattener/corrector for huge rasa's or shmidt cameras, or a large <F3 hyperbolic newt?

My first thought: 1.5um pixels will be all about the noise.

Given their intent to apply them to survelance cameras, the noise cant be that terrible. Otherwise i doubt the higher resolution would help in the dark.

I can't wait for people to try to use these teeny tiny pixels on a RedCat and then complain that their galaxy images are all soft presented at the image scale of a 12" reflector.

Here is the current Sony version of similar small pixel tech. It's only an 8k camera but 1.45um pixels so you can get a feel for the noise. Mostly planetary but some DSO shots. Cuiv has a video using one of these in a 6" Newt for a galaxy.

I see the published saturation is 3,900e, which I assume it means full well? I wonder at what gain that was calculated. Also there's no mention of the dynamic range. I'd be nice to know those metrics too.

This will only be of use to us if the read noise per area is significantly lower than what we currently have. If that was the case, it‘ld be touted all over the announcement. Since I know from experience that there are only a couple of available scopes that do a good job with 2.1um pixels on a M4/3 sensor I will confidently state that this is not anything that will push the envelope for AP.

This enables users to crop any part of the image captured by this sensor and enlarge it significantly while maintaining high resolution.

This must be the sensor used in TV shows where the cops can zoom way in on some random surveillance camera to read stuff like what's on someone's phone screen from across the street.
