Another of William Herschel's discoveries, NGC 4517 is an edge on spiral galaxy located in the Virgo II Groups of galaxies.  The Virgo II Groups are also known as the Virgo II Cloud and the Virgo Southern Extension.  These names refer to over 100 galaxy clusters and individual galaxies that stretch 30 mega-light years off the southern edge of the Virgo Supercluster.  I had never heard these terms before. NGC 4517 is around 40 million light years distant.  This galaxy appeared as a streak of light that appeared to hang from a foreground star (north).  I was also able to make out a dark lane just south of the foreground star and some mottling along the length of the galaxy.  This was a beautiful view in a dark sky.  Thanks for looking!

Clear skies,

Randolph

Really nice capture Randolph.  That dark lane is intriguing.

A fine job with this one. I used to visit it with my old c11 and enjoyed for the reasons(descriptions) you listed.'Hanging' from the star is a perfect analogy. Well drawn!

An excellent sketch!  Always fun to look these online and compare drawings to photographs. In this case some of the pictures are very close to the drawing. Usually the photos show much more.

Everything about that work, including you're work observing it was awesome.Randolph.....THANK YOU!

Few things 'tempt me', reconsidering my returning with only the use of binoculars this time, rather than another big scope, is seeing beautiful work such as this.....I'm a weak man, and hope Y'alls 'bad influence' don't wind up costing me BIG MONEY....

But my thoughts are tempered by the thought/hopes that my donation of my last set up to a local church for their youth group will allow another generation the chance to see the wonders as I have had......

But Y'all are tempting!waytogo.gif

Excellent capture and love you captured the dark lane. I think you captured the central region nicely with it's slight bulge there.

The C11 is a powerful deepsky scope and clearly showing its stuff. Nice piece Randolph.
