The HOC Atco should have excellent optics. A steal at that price.

I'd get that ATCO if it were close, excellent price.

I've had a lot of S&T magazines, going back to the 1940's.  I say had because I've been giving them away at some of the outreach events I attend.

Yeah, that thing is cute but $100 is way too much for it. And that bidder sounds like some compulsive butter, would not want to get caught up in the bidding war.

The value of any one thing is subjective. I was willing to pay $100 + $15 shipping to complete my collection of tabletop 60mm refractors. Apparently, b****k values it at more than $100, and you may value it at much less. Isn't that pretty much the story of these classic scopes?

I don't think that anyone is right or wrong on the price. Really good classic Japanese glass often sells for much less on SGW, and you can't tell me that a Unitron wouldn't sell for more. If it were two years ago, when I first dipped my toe in the classics, I'd probably be willing to go to something higher than $100. But, today my classics itch has pretty much been scratched unless something really rare popped up and no one else bid on it.

50 * 12 = 600 issues

600 * 8oz = 300lbs

300lbs /30lbs = 10 Boxes

10 Boxes @ $26/ea = $260

And that's assuming you don't use a bigger box to save more. And that's from ID to FL. So good ballpark.

Person would need to have a screw loose to ship 10 boxes as opposed to a skid shipped by freight.

Unless it was more by freight. And generally you need to make a pallet, fill out a BOL, drop it off at a freight center and pick it up at a freight center at the destination. Hard to beat media mail pricing and convenience.

Not really.  Most places will pick it up.  I go though Freightera in Canada.  There are hundreds of freight companies in the U.S.  an LTL shipment like that in the U.S. would cost less than $300.  Take the boxes, put them on a 1/2 pallet, shrink wrap them, or use a 1/2 triwall box and just put all the magazines in it.

A large part of the deal is what the seller is willing to do, their market options. Location location location.

The ATCO has a Hiyoshi lens ("Italic" HOC Glyph) - same as my 1st Classic, a Monolux 4380 (same gray colors & EQ top strap).  Got it on eBay for $150 + shipping.  Mint, and 100% complete -- MONOLUX Japan stickers on almost every part!  That was over a dozen years ago.

Brightest 60 F15 that I've owned.  I sold it after my Big Goofy Dog knocked it over on the patio...  IIRC, Chuck Hards was less impressed with Hiyoshi, compared to ASTRO or Yamamoto...

$20 is a Yard Sale Price.  Hope the lens is undamaged.

We already have a full set from the first one until around 2006 when the old man dropped is subscription.

I stopped getting it in 2005 from 1977.

I'm curious, if you don't mind sharing:

Why did you stop subscribing? Did something about S&T turn you off around 2005-2006?

Meade 628? kit, auction in Delta, OH

https://hibid.com/lo...pe?ref=lot-list

This is the Model 591 scope, a cheaper version of the 628.

I bought one in 1980, still have it, and use it often.  See my profile picture. That was at the solar eclipse where I was using for eyepiece projection.

It looks like pristine shape and would grab it if I didn't already have one.

I remember at one point, they went to some horrible printing process (cheaper) which was truly awful, the quality.  They switched back.  Not certain of when that was.

Last time I saw someone with a load of magazines, he came to Starfest (Ontario, Canada) put the boxes on the table and just offered them free.  But, that was Astronomy magazine which doesn't have the same desirability as Sky & Tel.

My old man stopped because they were getting too expensive and they were getting thinner and thinner. More ads than topics. He did have a subscription to Astronomy Magazine for a number of years because he got a deal where it was $0.99 per year. That deal finally dried up this year so he dropped it, too.

He says that the full library of S&T plus nearly every issue of The Sky is a treasure path to the past. He likes holding them and reading them and using them as a solid reference source. It puts him in touch with the people and times back then. The Internet matured and he gets all of the news instantly so anything in those publications is old news by the time it hits the presses. So much for technology. LOL

My daughter birthday gifted me a subscription to Astronomy magazine years ago which she renewed annually for several years. Then, as if that wasn't enough, my wife gave me a subscription to S&T so both magazines showed up every month for a year. It was interesting comparing the 2 mags each month, but I definitely enjoyed S&T more than Astronomy so I now had the perfect excuse to ask my daughter (without hurting her feelings) to quit renewing Astronomy every year.

I still subscribe to S&T, but only to the digital edition. The stacks of the old magazines was getting way too tall! lol.gif

Astronomy magazine was a large part of what drew me into the astronomy. I am pretty sure I have the entire first year in my collection. I quickly saw that S&T seemed to have had more advanced information, but neither could get me to consistently read through the issues as they arrived. I think I only subscribed one year of each, then another year of S&T later on, but still the same.

I subscribed for 40 years (1978 to 2018) and then stopped. S & T dropped the ball IMO. S & T was used to to old: we have content and that content is valuable and that's what we are selling and nothing is free model. But with the internet, it's not content that is valuable it's interflow of information. The more people on your platform the more you can charge advertisers – no matter what the content is.

S & T could have easily been and had the jump on a site like Cloudynights. Again, the ball was dropped. There are other reason's as well but a few too many to go into here. It's really too bad because S & T was a huge part of my astro journey.
