Edit: Of course, if you squish your glasses closer to your eye while observing, the optical shop measurement associated with normal wear will be greater than what you experience while observing. A little at-the-eyepiece experimentation with how much squishing you do to see the entire FOV with your glasses on might be helpful.

Hello David,

I actually had a pair of glasses made at the optician's that are designed only for use with binoculars and telescopes, with a magnification of 0.25 diopters higher so they sit closer to my eyes.
Unfortunately, I seem to be blessed with plenty of Neanderthal genes, so my nose is quite protruding, and I'm constantly pushing my natural limits with this facial physiognomy.grin.gif

Andreas:

Just a note about the proper terminology:

It's not a protruding nose, it's deep set eyes.

Hello,

the dioptrx is arrived today!

Wow, for the first time I can easily see the entire field of view of the Nagler 31mm. with eyeglasses this was hardly possible; at best I could see 70-75°.

During the day, the optical performance appears clear and sharp. Unfortunately, the weather forecast for the next few days isn't good enough for test the lens in the sky, but I'm hopeful.

Thanks again everyone for the helpful advice.waytogo.gif

Out of interest, what strength did you get ?
looking forward to hear how it feels at night and wether the whole field of view is sharp without having to rotate the dioptrix a little for stars at the edge

Following the advice of some people here, I bought my glasses with a strength of 2.0 diopters.

Yes, I'm also curious to see how they behave at night. They look good during the day, but things can be noticeably different at night. I'll report back...

I did the same about a year ago and I kick myself for not doing this sooner. The Dioptrx plus Nagler 31 is a game changer for me pin point stars everywhere,  One thing too is once I got rid of the astigmatism my eye doesn’t notice the field curvature from my refractor as much. .  I get it that this will vary by individual so I’m not saying that the dioptrx flattens the field or anything like that but I guess my eyes/brain can accommodate much easier now that the astigmatism is gone.

I did get my dioptrx 0.5 diopters bigger than my Rx.  It works for me like magic.  I do admit that its borderline comfortable/easy to see the entire field for me that I won’t argue with those that dislike the N31/Dioptrx combo.  I consider myself lucky   For anyone considering It’s my opinion that dioptrx ts worth the cost to experiment.  It’s probably one of the cheapest things I’ve ever spent money on to improve the hobby.  A nice observing chair and a dew heater rank up there too with dioptrx.

congrats on your purchase and hope it brings you lots of fun.

cheers

I did try the Dioptrx with the N31T5, and found that the dioptrx ate up too much ER.

Hello,

same experience here, the Dioptrx is a real winner.

Yesterday I was able to test the Nagler with the Dioptrx in the sky for the first time! The seeing was suboptimal, with very humid air but at least reasonably clear.

I took advantage of the brief opportunity to test the combination on the Takahashi 76 DCU, the magnification was quite low at around 18x, the EP was 4.1mm.

What can I say? I've owned the Nagler 31mm for many years. I used it regularly with my Dobsonians in the past, but for the reasons mentioned above, I always struggled with the eyepiece. Then it sat in my case for a long time, and I considered selling it, and now it suddenly works for me.

Basically, I can see the entire field of view with the Dioptrx without any shadows. The Nagler is still not as comfortable as my Delos, Delite, or Radian, but it's a significant improvement over observing with my glasses. The eyepiece is actually usable for the first time.

The Dioptrx really seems to be a good alternative to observing with glasses for some TV eyepieces. It might not always work, but for me, the Dioptrx has made the 31mm a usable eyepiece again. It might be worth a try...

Thats great news. Ive been leaving my old 1.25 dioptrx permanently attached to my 31N for years, preferring over glasses. This week I received a second dioptrx (1.5) and installed it on my semi-abondoned 21E and now enjoy using it again. The view is slightly restricted but now it is comfortable and totally usable vs trying to accomodate glasses with it. Well worth the money to get the 21E back into use.

The 21E was never intended to be used with glasses which is why you found it unworkable. I find that even with a Dioptrx on the Ethos, I have to really jam my eye up against the rubber guard and strain to see the FOV in its entirety. It isn't natural for me. It's nothing like the experience of using Ethos with contacts- that, to me, was much more natural.

I prefer to instead use eyepieces designed for use with glasses. Those include:

Delites

Delos

Morphii

ES92s

I recently used the ES92s the other night, and I was reminded why I loved my 100° EPs so much. The ES92s are the closest I'll ever get to that feeling of using my old 100° EPs again.

Of course!

I bought my 21E before I had astigmatism. After a few years I developed astigmatism and since then have bought long eye relief eyepieces and binoculars.

I hear ya.

I consider my 17mm ES92 probably my favorite eyepiece. Morpheus eyepieces are my favorite in binocular telescopes, followed by Delos, XWs, and UFFs.

I frequently use a 31mm Nagler with a Dioptrix which corrects my exact cylinder error.  Stars are pinpoints.

I love to use this in my Dob with a Paracorr.  It is such a pleasure to see perfect stars edge to edge in big clusters like the Pleiades.

Yup once I expand my ES92s to 6 additional focal lengths, I'm going to complete my Morphii. After that I'll have to decide whether it is worth getting the rest of the Delites, Delos, and NT7's.

It’s the only Ethos I don’t have but I think I’m going to take a gamble on it.   The N31+ dioptrx is amazing for me and I can use my 17E  and shorter Ethos without needing astigmatism correction in my refractors F7.4 - but the 21E  idk.  I’ve been experimenting with a 20mm plossl and it’s sharp as long as I hold my eye perfectly steady.  But a 24mm Pan is a no go.  I figure I may get the 21E anyway and at least if it doesn’t work in my refractors it will be sharp  in the SCTs.  I tried a dioptrx on the 17E just for comfort testing and agree it’s tight and restricts FOV.

So it seems you're using a 31 mm Nagler + a DioptRx and eyeglasses? That seems redundant.

Jon

Huh, yeah I'm not sure what kind of trip I was on when I wrote that. I believe I meant to say:

  • "I found the Dioptrx + 31T5 a little tight on ER"

and also

  • "I found the 31T5 + thick plastic frames a little more tight on ER"

Both are true from limited experience, but I'm nothing if not an unreliable narrator, so who knows.
