I noticed I have assembled some Astronomy Hats I would like to share with everyone.

Description of Hats from Left to Right:

  • Celestron Baseball Cap. Bought new from Celestron and I have never worn it.
  • Meade Baseball Cap. Bought new from Meade and I have never worn it.
  • Stellarvue Baseball Cap. Was included with something I bought from Stellarvue but I cannot remember what it was. New and never worn.
  • PARI Baseball Cap. Bought new when I visited PARI in 2008. New and never worn. For those interested, PARI stands for Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute located in Rosman NC. www.pari.edu.
  • Scopestuff Baseball Cap. Was included with some eyepieces I bought from them. I have worn this one some in the field.
  • Morehead Planetarium Baseball Cap. Bought at Morehead Planetarium (UNC-CH) around 2005 when I visited with my oldest daughters class trip. I have worn this a lot and have lost it twice. Once at the NC Zoo and once at Williamsburg VA. Both times I called them the next day and they found it in the lost and found and returned it to me free of charge. I consider this my lucky hat.

Hats I missed out on that I wished I had bought: Orion Telescopes and Binoculars, Questar Corporation.

I don't have any, but none of those are warm enough for the UK winter, its either a bobble hat or a beanie for me.  :-)

Nice collection. Mine is limited to the Stellarvue (which I bought) and the Meade which I got as a give-away when I attended the Julian Starfest many suns ago. I wonder if Altair Astro has one, I'd like that one.

I have a few (Explore Scientific, Astro-Physics, one from a Montana star party from at least a couple of decades back); but this is the only one I have a photo of:

I have two astro hats.

I received one from TeleVue when I bought my TV-102 refractor in 2008 and sent in the warranty card.  I have one from Astro-Physics when I answered a questionnaire at NEAF almost 20 years ago.

I also have an A-P beanie that I wear in the winter.

All of these have been worn hundreds of times and might be too beat up for photos.  <LOL>

The only hat I wear more often is my Liverpool FC cap!  YNWA!!!

I should have bought this one, but I had 5-6 other baseball caps at the time.

I must have at least a dozen astronomy caps.

The most useful one is my Powercap.

I saw at the ATT (the European NEAF) a similar one, years ago, and always regretted not to buy it. I went again last year with my brother in law and a friend to prepare for an astro-trip, saw again the cap and was extremely tempted, and realized "ok but then when you look in the eyepiece the visor hits the telescope, it's not convenient". We did not buy it.

Later our friend said: "hey but we could just turn the cap when looking in the eyepiece". We felt very stupid...
So this year if I go to the ATT...

EDIT: I just realized I cannot go to the ATT. for a next time...

Nitro the astronomy dog rests on a long-sleeved shirt w/ the image of Percival Lowell observing Venus, bought at Lowell Observatory in 1993.  Lowell Observatory eclipse hat.

While not an astronomy hat per se, I included the Owl Research Institute hat since I occasionally hear screech owls while observing at home, and barred and great horned owls at Geauga County's Observatory Park and at Willow Creek Ranch at the Hole in the Wall in Kaycee, Wyoming.

Left the Owl hat at Mallorca Restaurant a couple of weeks ago; thankfully they put it aside for me.

There was an era when I and some of my friends in the local amateur astronomy community used to freak out the public by wearing folded-tin-foil hats to make sure our brains did not get reprogrammed by the mother ship.

Sometimes I think our efforts were inadequate.

Clear sky ...

Being bald, I have a lot of baseball caps and cowboy hats.  But I only have a few astronomy hats.. I have two from a local observatory and a couple of Astromart caps that I never wear because they are black.

I love the photo of your dog resting on your shirt.....dogs deserve to be comfortable and taken care of.  I hope you have many more years together.

I bought a TV-85 from a fellow who wanted to go back to school after retirement. He kept (or couldn't find) the eyepiece that had come with it, but I had the pleasant surprise to find a Tele-Vue hat in the telescope case!

Neat.  I've never thought about an astronomy related cap.  I've only got collegiate caps, very worn.  I wear Stetson hats when I want to be fancy.  :)  But I think I might look into getting an astronomy cap, or have one made.  Thanks for the idea.

Regarding the Morehead Planetarium, in my opinion it's now a shell of its former glory.  I LOVED that place in decades past.  Went for a visit last year after a long absence and was so disappointed that it was remodeled and missing a lot of stuff.  Gone were all the cool astronomy and space displays.  The famous whole room orrery is also gone.  Now they have more earth type science stuff instead of astronomy and space.  Even the gift shop was missing all the multitudes of science and astronomy/space gadgets.  I still have a gyroscope and radiometer that I bought there in the 1970s.

I don’t wear ball caps as a rule, but picked up this 50th Anniversary chapeau at Siding Springs Observatory on my visit to Australia earlier this year...

I have one of these originals in mesh vest and just the hood varieties and a Lunt solar observing hood. These are nearly as valuable to my observing as are my variable height chairs. R-Sky now offers the best hoods & hooded vests for nighttime viewing.
