April 18

A number of new white light Sunspots, some yet to be named at the time of my post.  Sunspot AR4065 not too large as yet but give it time.  The more mature AR4062 which has been well canvassed by Gary and others in their posts just yesterday, displays an broadening intricate pattern of light bridges that may yet carve up the spot into a small archipelago.

Just for interest on white light I have varied the respectable ZWO 533mm with the smaller pixel color camera ZWO 676mc to see if I can get more barlow effect in with less glass.  Seeing was not really good or constant enough for definitive testing but you may still be interested in the comparison the first two white light images provide. Sharpness of mono versus smaller pixels and less glass in the color entry but I did not set them to the same magnification.

The main attraction today for me is a very well defined 'Seahorse' filament grazing near the white (not very salty) spume of a plege location that has a small tethered prom.  Okay as you can see from the subsequent Ha whole disc entry I had to turn it upside down for the effect but you must admit it is quite striking and a nicely contrasting filament!  I put this forward as my suitable marine follow up to Rigel's sailfish prom of a few weeks ago.  Now it appears to be located at a sunspot but if so I cannot pin it down.  It could be tiny 4063 which I am not sure I found on my WL whole disc, or a new spot or a non-spot.  There were a ridge of faint proms or flares around the new sunspot areas on the left but they were a bit faint, perhaps because of my HRG fitting, and I only have 3.65 kb left unless I start a new panel lol.gif

Interesting comparison Foc.  The 533 image “appears” sharper but probably due to the scale of the images.  It would be interesting to see the comparison when the resolution is matched between the cameras.  Yep, that’s a Seahorse and that thick prom has been interesting to watch all week.  Following GONG I have noticed that filament go through some very active periods where I thought it might lift off, only to settle back down and become quite quiescent.  As to its location you might find this abstract interesting.

Nice shots BTW!

Thanks Rigel for the comments and abstract,, the whitelight images I have indicate a number of pinprick size spots in the mid region, so I think there is a chance it is associated with one.

I did not mean to suggest the 'Seahorse prom' was a new prom, unlike the spots, but for the prom simply a 'new look' through changing the orientation (actually orienting to close to how it appeared in my camera today) on a day its detail was a little finer than my usual view.  Perhaps lower detail may occur when these proms are moving actively, so I may have been lucky to catch the 'Seahorse' prom in a quiet moment.

Oh, I didn’t mean to imply that you thought it was new, I was focused on your comment about its location in a fairly barren area of the disk and it triggered the memory of reading about proms and their position on the sun relative to sunspots.

Nice persuasively shaped dragon Rigel!,  I would not want to argue with that one for sure, even in an asbestos outfit, but I had been thinking of the much calmer sea dragon.

And apart from this silly sunlight banter, I wish to give thanks to all those who liked the Wavesharp II/GIMP prepared filament image including of course Christian Vildadrich
