I stayed up late to capture loads of images of the southern pinwheel galaxy. So I'm pretty unhappy. I've seen many posts about this and they say, change the star detection threshold and, make sure your in focus, make sure the star trails aren't too long, and I have always had some extent of star trails, but dss has stacked way worse than these images. Lately dss has not been stacking all of my frames a lot of the time, maybe a new update? I've even tried old data that worked then, not now, and now lets het back to the southern pinwheel galaxy. it's only stacking 61 compared to 300 and I've checked the frames it does not stack and they are fine, if not better that the ones it did stack. any help would be appreciated.

Help. You may not like it.

DSS is an ANCIENT program that often causes difficulties for beginners.

The best cure is to drop DSS by moving on to a proper astrophotography processing program that calibrates/stacks/processes. My recommendation is Astro Pixel Processor. Many like Siril.

Pretty much all experienced imagers have done this, and no longer use DSS.

I am away from my PC right now, I will send some stretched subs, I have tried stacking in siril, I have tried siril with some frames, and it gives me a messed up result but siril is amazing for processing the linear image

DSS is well known not stacking frames and usually it's because stars are not round enough.

If adjusting detection threshold doesn't help then you should get more round stars or use another software.

Others have mentioned recommendations already.

PS DSS is old but has its shortcomings but it's still actively developed.

PS2 I can't your example frames bigger ("You do not have permission to view this image").

Thank you.

Clearly the image which didn't stack has trailed stars.
Not sure  if it's worth stacking so bad/trailed frames.

I've stacked worse frames than that with a good outcome is there any way to do it anyway.

I've only used Siril few times but I know you can adjust the detection parameters.

Someone sure can give better/easier advice but I give you this (somewhat theoretical) link:

I copied the OP's two images.

Loaded them into DSS, adjusted the Threshold, and they stacked:

Which apparently the "proper astrophotography processing program" couldn't.

"proper astrophotography processing program"??
I used dss. I actually tried stacking those frames too and they stacked, but all together they do not only stacks about 60

To be honest in the 60 images stacked there were decently big star trails so I think it was a lost cause
