Had not seen a posting about this article about stargazing from railroad trains.

I'm thinking about it, and thought it might be of general interest.

Thanks for sharing.

I grew up traveling by train as a kid.

I've been on a couple of these but never at night.

Might have to look at booking myself a trip.

I'm deeply concerned about dirty glass, reflections of inside lights, and large vibrations ruining the ability to view much of anything. I'm open to my mind being changed however and especially curious if anyone goes on one of these and reports back.

This actually would be really neat to do!

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Get up into the top deck of those sky roof cars, get all the lights out, and a pair of 10x50s to scan all over with. waytogo.gif

Maybe 8x42s because of the vibration. It sounds like fun.

I was traveling across the southwest USA with my soon to be wife in January 1974 by train. We slept in the train and went to sit in the dome car one evening. We had been hearing in the news about Comet Kohoutek which turned out not to be a big sensation. But there it was, right above us while we laid back in the dome car and watched the sky. No one else shared that view with us. It was magical and memorable.
