Maybe try a shot directly over the screw? I assume you want to know what will fit it?

Or perhaps a paint mismatch.

It's a challenge - spot the issue !

Possibly OP is unhappy about the paint colour mismatch (grey vs beige).

Or doesn't realize it's a metric cap screw, being Japanese. Imperial Allen keys wont fit.

Hello GADify,

Here,I will take a shot at the ambiguity. The scope is pre 2016 and the starfinder mount is a more recent manufacture. Takahashi has changed its paint color over the years. The one valuable lesson that I learned about Takahashi scopes is, Dont buy the first one, because you will want to buy more of them.

HAPPY SKIES AND KEEP LOOKING UP Jethro

Cut the OP some slack. Check out the last line in his very long signature.

Maybe the picture just shows that the OP has a screw loose?

I can't believe that's ambiguous. That color mismatch doesn't drive everyone crazy?

No. It doesn't matter at night.

If you buy top-end gear it is always best to buy the full kit - all accessories - at the same time. Otherwise the resale value later on may be diminished. Obviously someone didn't know that.

I've experienced this a few times where I did buy the full kit and decades later - in very good condition - the full kit was worth much more than I paid as there can be people who will pay a premium for the full matching kit as a collectible.

Similarly if you have a premium item, think very carefully before modifying it. Original condition with all items is valuable, yet with anything missing is not. Modifications done poorly will reduce the item to junk status.

Yes, only a collector who be picky about something irrelevant in the dark.

You could send it back to the factory for color matching.

Takahashi sells paint. I've repainted an entire EM-10 mount...

At first I just wanted to paint over the scuff marks. But then I realised the shades of green weren't 100% identical with the original (I suspect they never are and it depends on the paint mix batch), so I had to repaint the entire thing.

If that's all you're complaining about you haven't yet begun to scratch the conundrums of Takahashi adapters.  Just you wait.  Especially with tariffs making color matching the least of your worries.

:waytogo:

The color mismatch wouldn't bother me but the lack of a quick release would.

Unless one is obsessive about such things (and aren't we all) there is no need to add Takahashi finders or rings or mounting bars, etc. to a Tak OTA. There are less expensive aftermarket solutions for all of these things. I have two Takahashi refractor OTAs and I don't believe I have one Tak accessory.

All of my finder shoes are aftermarket and they all take Synta finders and rings and are all quick-release.

In the photo, the top finder shoe mounted to the OTA (with the laser pointer) is silver and takes Synta rings and is quick-release. The silver looks good on any color.

To be honest, folks buy Taks for the killer optics. What would you rather have, Synta optics and perfect color matching accessories or Tak optics and a slight difference in color?

Bob

I have a friend who likes to post mystery photos on social media. He never responds so the post remains a mystery. However, I bet Takahashi has been trying to reach the OP about his extended telescope warranty...
