Hello, after a season with my new C6, I really need to replace the finder. The squatting and neck craning to see through it has actually put me off going out for more than one night. So, after a lot of looking around, I mostly decided on this Stellarvue:

https://www.stellarv...product-reviews

Reasons are generally superb reviews of the optics, I can use my own eyepieces with it, and it would be a very nice lightweight little scope for camping trips, just to grab and take on a night hike away from lights to use by itself.

I'm not 100% sure what I need to buy to mount it on my C6, though. Stellarvue's site shows using their "R050" rings, which is fine, but there are several models of the R050, and the one is described as for SCTs says it's good for 8" SCTs or larger. So is it not ok for a C6? And either way, wouldn't I still have to buy a shoe for OTA for the bracket to mount on?

I was also looking closely at Celestron's own RACI, but that one looks absurdly heavy and reviews say it's overly complicated to align. Those things would maybe be ok if it were significantly cheaper, but it isn't! Apertura also has a nice looking finder here: https://www.highpoin...racket-a-fra850 , but I don't like how high the bracket is. The price is tempting, though.

Anyone use any of these finders for their C6 and have recommendations?

I also can't give enough thanks to all who help us newbies. These forums are invaluable.

I can vouch for the quality of the SV finders. I have two- one for my dob and one for my C11.

My recommendation would be to call them. They are helpful folks and will point you to the right stuff for your C6.

Clear skies,

Paul

I also agree the SV option is the best one.  I have used their finder scopes on several SCT’s I have owned.  The holes to attach the finder scope mounting base on the C6 are about 30-32mm apart.  I would think the smaller finder mounting base they offer would work fine.  But since these finder mounting bases are slightly elevated, you will likely have to buy longer screws to attach it as the stock Celestron ones may be too short.

It actually never occurred to me that there might still be a company that answers the phone (and would be actually helpful). I will definitely give them a call.

Thanks, this is helpful. I expect you need to be particular about the screws, since too-long screws could damage something.

... Just went and did some googling, and found this link someone posted: https://www.celestro...dgehd-telescope

Looks like you do need to be aware of screw length as well.

Yes just long enough to tighten it, maybe 4 or 5 revolutions.  Otherwise they could impact the primary mirror.
