I was gonna buy some silicone carbide and have seen both green and black, which one is preferred for mirror rough grinding? Is there a difference? Also what amount of purity is needed?

Green is more pure. use green instead of black, green is much harder and last for longer time before you put new powders to replace wasted one.

Pure single crystal SiC with a hexagonal structure is colourless.
Nitrogen doping produces the green colour.
Colour also depends on the polytype (more than 250 for SiC) and the dopant impurity (Nitrogen, Aluminium etc.) as well as departures of the silicon carbide from stoichiometry.
