Why did Astro-Tech go from a AT92 to a AT90CFT? Why not stick with 92mm? Was it the glass type? If so, why change from 92mm to 90mm?

Astronomics has stated many times on these forums that the reason the AT 92 was discontinued was because they were not able to get a focal reducer made for the telescope for a reasonable price. As the telescope was designed as an AP telescope this created a major problem so they decided to discontinue and move to the current line where they could get focal reducers made.

But why not stick with 92mm? That 2mm made the difference?

Probably to reduce confusion.

It changed the entire optical system from a 92mm f/5.5 to a 90mm f/6, so it is a bit more than just 2mm in size. We would have loved to continue to make the 92mm, but it just wasn't happening.

The 92 is a fantastic telescope, I own one and was lucky to get it. How I acquired mine was I had the 90CFT on order prior to their first shipment arrival and noticed a 92 come up for sale. As that was the telescope I really wanted I cancelled the CFT’s order and bought the 92. Mike was very gracious when I told him why I was cancelling the CFT’s order which just showed me what type of man he is.

The 0.8x FR/FF for the ATCF90T works very well with the AT92. You need the stellarvue M68 to M63 adapter.

As I have stated several times, mines not for sale!

I have an AT-92 but if I didn't, I'd be very happy to own either the limited production run of an AT90CFT or the white tube AT90EDX. I use my AT-92 for visual for now but will dabble in AP at some point. Its really a fantastic refractor with a Televue Binoviewer also.

Frankly, I don’t see how one could go wrong with the AT90CFT LE or the AT90EDX. I’m purely visual (save for my SeeStar) and I absolutely adore my CFT. It’s truly a wonderful scope.

I'm the opposite - I've not put an eyepiece into my AT90CFT since I got it - I put the reducer on and an ASI533MM camera. I've now got an ASI2600MM camera on it along with a filter wheel full of large filters, off-axis guider and camera, and since I've been trying my luck with galaxies (Tampa glow, not much luck) I've currently got the 1.0x flattener on it. The speed of the optics and the quality of glass (FCD100+lanthanum) along with good hardware makes it an exceptional instrument for the price. It's short, so I've had to get a bit creative to come closer to balance by using a long Losmandy plate with risers to accommodate the control computer at the front.

Others have reported good results with the TSFLAT2 flattener and the AT92.
