It's a Vietnam era military night vision scope. Starlight scope AN/TVS-2B.

In the pic 1) there is a fire extinguisher at hand 2) there is a full belt and no casings on the ground 3) that guy is probably a cook who burns the food and the mess kitchen.

You can, however, use that scope in daytime. It has a small hole in the cap that lets in enough light to make it work. The mount looks flimsy compared with what we were issued (stateside, mid or late '70s.) OT: Don't dump your rounds on the ground, grunt.

Something a little more practical (and less likely to remove an eye).

Well...judging from the biceps and lean build he may have been 11B before the pic was taken. Afterwards? My guess is 94A, which is permanent KP. (Not cook; assistant to the cook!)

My old man says that is a first generation night scope. He pretty much was drooling when he saw the Ma Deuce. Apparently, he was able to spend some time with one many, many, many years ago. Very much like the fellow in the photo except there was plenty of brass flying and no bad guys left to sort out. He said that they turned into "Baloney Mist". LOL

My old man says that the young fellow has his leg against the tripod which indicates that he has experience with it. Even though this was a gag shot for moral and to tease the folks back home it's not too far off the mark.

By the way, some of those things are over 100 years old and still in service today! Mr. Browning made things the right way and his products are as immortal as is he.

The Fat Electrician has an excellent and "colorful" short video about them. https://www.youtube....h?v=tMJR6DLuPWY

We absolutely love The Fat Electrician's videos. He is very direct and very creative in his presentations. He is definitely not for sissies, though. He is for the "Been There! Done That! Bought the T-Shirt! Got The Scars!" club members, of which we are both members.  BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

The Ma Deuce does have a baby brother that was created by the Marines in WW-II but, it never went into production. Check it out here: https://www.youtube....h?v=pjRWJj_Hej8

The old man thinks that last photo is somewhere near the Highlands or the area not too far from Hue. Maybe looking toward Laos? Details please. (Sinister smile)

Yep, I don’t know about the scope but it’s on the Browning M2 heavy machine gun (air cooled with quick and easy changeable barrels (they overheat quickly). The ammo is .50 cal. BMG. Vietnam era that began life as a 30.06 in WWI. It has selective fire, from quick singles to full auto. Fun to fire and accurate. I’ve fired one!

Q

My "old man" was also very much in touch with this weapon. He was a waist gunner on a B-17 in the early days of the 8th Air Force before effective fighter support. He, however, was glad to be done with all that, having survived when his chance of doing so for 25 missions was 2%. He made it to 13 missions before he was grounded for frostbite. He had removed his headset to clear out the frozen sweat of nervous exhaustion in the earphone.

He loved rifles and handguns, but did not fetishize weapons. He knew first hand what they do to flesh and bone. And B-17s.
